Storyline

This movie shows the simplest difference between Europe and former Soviet Union. It is the eponymous 89 mm - Russian train tracks are 89 mm wider than tracks in European countries. And because of this fact, it is not easy to go through the Soviet border by train in Brest as the passengers in the film do. Written by Monika Krzyzanowska

track distances
8 November 2019 | by lee_eisenbergSee all my reviews

Marcel Lozinski's Academy Award-nominated "89 mm od Europy" ("88 mm from Europe" in English) looks at the difference in track widths between Russian railroads and those in the rest of Europe. I think that I saw this mentioned in the thriller "Transsiberian" starring Woody Harrelson.

It's a short documentary, mostly showing scenes of a train station in Brest, Belarus, while the cars get adjusted. A fascinating topic nonetheless. I haven't heard of Lozinski apart from this short, but he's apparently directed several movies over the years. Worth seeing.
