Anachronisms

During the tank battle, the Soviets are using T-34-85 tanks. The Battle took place from 1942-1943, the T-34-85 did not see service until late 1943/early 1944. The correct model for the time would be the T-34-76.

Early on while the soldiers are playing cards in the train one of them has a tattoo of the emblem of the German football club FC Schalke 04 on his upper arm. This version of the emblem has not been introduced by the club until 1956.

Continuity

Towards the end of film a Ju52 drops a single supply parachute. When dropped out of the plane and falling towards ground, it is green, when they recover it on the ground it is white. (In reality the Luftwaffe was first using white parachutes until they realized it is too difficult to spot white parachutes on the snowy ground.)

Errors in geography

At the beginning of the movie "Porto Cervo" is indicated as the location where the German army is located. But the city is clearly Cervo, in Liguria. Porto Cervo is in Sardinia.

Factual errors

In a field hospital, a man is having his leg amputated without anaesthetic. Presumably, they ran out of anaesthesia, but even so, they would have put a piece of leather between his teeth to bite down upon and prevent him from biting his tongue off.

In the pre-credits it says that the German 6th Army was, at the start of the of battle at Stalingrad, commanded by Generaloberst (Colonel General) Paulus. Paulus was however promoted to Generaloberst first on 30 November 1942.

After the factory battle, some of the supposedly dead soldiers move. Even if a few of them may have been wounded only, one extra clearly lifts his head prematurely.

When the German soldier in a trench fires his MP-40 up at the T-34 about to run him over, the bullet puffs appear in the snow next to it as though the gun is fired from an elevation above the tank.

Spoilers

The goof items below may give away important plot points.

Continuity

Towards the end of the film, as Irina is trying to lead the Leutnant and Fritz to safety, they are walking through a heavy snow field under grey skies. Then a flare appears, the Red Army opens fire, and Irina runs towards the camera waving her hands and shouting, but the sky is blue and the scenery behind her has much less snow.

Revealing mistakes

When Otto shoots himself, there is a pause between the shot and blood hitting the wall behind him. Also, the blood clearly comes somewhere behind the chair Otto is sitting, rather than from his head.
