In 1881 Ludwig of Bavaria goes on a cruise on a Swiss lake. He takes with him a famous actor, Josef Kainz, to act out the scenes from a story which took place on the lake, at the actual locations.

Storyline

The film tells the story of Ludwigs relationship with the actor Josef Kainz (an actor famous at the time for his voice) during a cruise in 1881. The actor being required to recreate the personages he plays in the theatre from a story which takes place around the lake, at the actual locations around the lake. The actor arrives pompous with the thought of being asked to personally accompany Ludwig. The wind is taken out of his sails a little when the butler tells him that the king did not invite Josef Kainz but the personages he plays. Written by M. Deathers

I found this movie quite interesting, but I didn't like Helmut Bergers effeminate behaviour, was the King really like this? Or did they just put him into the "when a man is interested in other men he is effeminate" stereotype. Also, I found it quite ridiculous that in the movie the king had no beard, but in the end when the photograph of the real king taken with that actor he had a beard....
