Of all of Angelina Jolie's films, this is rarely discussed. Jolie did discuss it briefly on "Inside the Actor's Studio" in 2005. She said: "I did a fantastic B-movie." When host James Lipton asked if it was a happy experience, she replied: "It was until I saw it."

The film takes place decades after the original Cyborg (1989) starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dayle Haddon and Vincent Kyln appear as Gibson Rickenbacker, Pearl Prophet and Fender Tremolo, in a flashback from archive footage of the first film, which is mentioned by Mercy.

The film was released 15 years before the television premiere of a sci-fi series which the secondary protagonist happened to be a female cyborg - Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008). The series was based on The Terminator (1984) and Albert Pyun, the writer and director of Cyborg (1989) cited The Terminator (1984) as one of his influences behind Cyborg, which Cyborg 2: Glass Shadow is a sequel.
