Hasbro planning new Power Rangers movies

While Lionsgate’s Power Rangers movie was intended as the first instalment of a series of films, things didn’t quite work out as planned for the big screen reboot of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers franchise.

The movie – directed by Dean Israelite and starring Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, Rj Cyler, Becky G and Ludi Lin – stumbled at the box office and grossed just $142.3 million worldwide, putting to an end any plans for a six-movie arc.

Since then however, Hasbro has acquired the Power Rangers IP in a deal worth over half a billion dollars, and as you might expect with a deal of that value, the toy giant has a number of plans up its sleeve including more feature films.

“We’ve now announced the acquisition of Power Rangers,” said Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner (via TokuNation). “This is really a great statement about where we believe we are in developing our brand blueprint.

Hasbro Acquires Saban Brands’ Power Rangers and Other Entertainment Assets for $522 Million

Hasbro Acquires Saban Brands’ Power Rangers and Other Entertainment Assets for $522 Million
Hasbro Inc. and Saban Properties LLC announced on Tuesday that the toymaker will acquire Saban’s entertainment brands, which includes Power Rangers along with My Pet Monster, Popples, Julius Jr., Luna Petunia and Treehouse Detectives.

The key, however, is the Power Rangers brand.

The deal is a combination of cash and stock that is valued at $522 million. Hasbro had previously paid Saban $22.25 million in licensing rights for Power Rangers in February 2018 that was slated to begin in 2019. That amount will be credited to this purchase price.

For Hasbro, acquiring the rights to “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” is key. Created by Saban and initially launched in 1993, the series has nearly 900 episodes — which airs in 150 markets worldwide — produced to date, and in 2017, a live-action movie distributed by Lions Gate Entertainment sold $142 million worth of tickets worldwide.

The first set of products from Hasbro will be available in spring 2019.

“Power Rangers is an iconic brand built on a heritage of great storytelling and merchandising with tremendous upside potential when fully executed across Hasbro’s Brand Blueprint,” said Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s chairman and chief executive officer said in a release.

“Shortly after entering into our licensing arrangement, it became clear that now was the time to begin investing in unlocking Power Rangers’ full potential,” he added. “We see significant opportunity for Power Rangers across our entire Brand Blueprint, including toys and games, consumer products, digital gaming and entertainment, as well as geographically throughout our global retail footprint.”

Haim Saban, founder of Saban Brands and creator of Power Rangers, added, “Twenty-five years after launching Power Rangers, I believe the future for this brand has never been greater,” said also said in the same release. Hasbro’s leadership in innovation, storytelling and brand stewardship make it the perfect company to further develop the global reach and appeal of the Power Rangers property.”

Panel Discussion #50: March 2018′s Top 30 Comics (Part 1)

Welcome back to another installment of Panel Discussion – this time featuring a rundown of my picks of the Top 30 comics released in March 2018. This is part one, a countdown of books 30-16… But first the caveats:

First and foremost this is simply my list and with that comes a great deal of subjectivity. Any art form is a subjective medium and taste plays a major role. So if you feel my rankings are way off you probably have a legitimate point. My hope is to simply to highlight great books that deserve attention. We too often focus on the negative so why not take some time to celebrate the positive.

Since this is my list that also means I can only rank issues I have actually read. There may be a book that is in your top five that does not make the cut. Please let me know. I try
