Ensemble cast of off-the-wall Warner Brothers characters, appearing in a wide variety of roles. Mainly staring the Warner Siblings Wakko, Yakko, and Dot, who were created by the WB Studios but found they were just too "zany" to be of any use to the studio. Other popular characters in the series include: Pinky and the Brain, two lab mice bent on world domination. Rita and Runt, a cat and dog team who get into perilous situations every episode but always seem to find time to sing a song, Bobby, Pesto, and Squit, the Goodfeathers, part of a New York City mob of pigeons, who take orders from The Godpigeon and worship Martin Scorsese. Slappy the Squirrel is a late middle-age squirrel. She starred in a series of popular cartoons in the Golden Age but is now retired and looking after her nephew, Skippy Squirrel. When the show reran on Nickelodeon and Nicktoons almost all references to Warner Bros. were removed from the opening. Allowing a very unusual transition involving the Nickelodeon logo bursting and the opening cut right to the WB water tower open. See more »
When I was a kid, this was my favorite show. I still love the show for its great music and hilarious episodes, but I don't admit it anymore. It's too bad that this is seen as a childish cartoon, because a lot of the jokes are for adults too. Not just the inside-jokes about Hollywood and Bill Clinton, but there were also jokes such as this one (from the Thanksgiving episode):
Yakko is protecting his turkey friend from a hunter who wants to make the turkey into Thanksgiving dinner. The hunter insists, "Give me the bird!" Yakko counters with, "We would, but the FOX censors won't allow it."
The music is great, the show is hilarious, the animation is outstanding. Some of the minor characters are really dumb though, (Minerva Mink, that nameless blue baby bird, etc.) but most of them are funny. It's a real shame that very few adults would sit down and watch this show.
