Words, Words, Words (1991)

Reci, reci, reci... (original title)
In a noisy bar crammed with people, the remarkably diverse clientele interacts with each other through a series of lively bubbles. Words can be rich and emotional, or sharp and pitilessly accurate; but, what would man be without them?

Storyline

In a noisy bar crammed with people, the extraordinarily diverse clientele interacts, converses--and finally--conflicts with each other, through a series of colourful and lively bubbles emanating from the speakers' mouths. Amid a sea of tables and chairs, a quiet waiter observes and catches intermittent snippets of private conversations, as the regulars around him chat incessantly. In the end, words can be rich, and emotional; sharp, and pitilessly accurate; cryptic or straightforward; nevertheless, what would man be without them? Written by Nick Riganas

Probably not everyone's cup o' tea
11 February 2008 | by MartinHaferSee all my reviews

While interesting in style, RECI, RECI, RECI is probably not a film that will appeal to anyone other than die-hard animation buffs. There isn't so much a story as a weird way of showing what people are saying by using cut out words. The animation style is unique but not especially pleasant. There are sound effects and sounds (such as people saying 'aahh') but no dialog--just what is in writing.

Frankly, I don't get it. After watching it, I still didn't see much of a point and it seemed less a cartoon short and more of an unsuccessful experiment. However, the Oscar people were impressed and nominated it for Best Animated Short. However, the category was otherwise well represented that year and RECI, RECI, RECI didn't stand a prayer. I just found it to be strange and quite unpleasant.
