MPAA Rated R for the strong depiction of a perverse sexual relationship

Sex & Nudity

  • How sex affects relationships is a prime focus of this film.
  • A woman dances provocatively in a semi-sheer dress. Her breasts are seen, and her pubic hair is discernable through the dress.
  • The same woman drinks milk and lets the milk drop onto her chest. She then rubs it on her body where you can see her breast. The milk is implied to simulate cum. She makes out with her husband then oral sex is implied.
  • The same couple go to a sex shop and the woman uses a dildo as a sword playfully.
  • The couple play in S&M outfits. The woman slowly runs her hand over the man's clothed genital area.
  • A prostitute is shown going down on a main character. No nudity shown just the woman's head bobbing up and down.

Violence & Gore

  • A woman attempts to shave a man with a straight razor, cutting him, we see some blood.
  • A man is hit by a car.
  • A man hits his wife after she throws her milk at him, knocking her out. Later she has a black eye.

  • Infrequent use of f*ck, but almost always hatefully, and occasionally in the sexual sense. Not much otherwise.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A main character is a chain-smoker. Many other people are often shown smoking and drinking. Characters are occasionally shown drunk enough to behave rudely or stupidly.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • During a BDSM scene involving a man tied to a chair, his face shows strong fear that the woman will go too far. Being gagged, he cannot utter a safe word. She knocks him over in a way that risks serious injury
  • A woman yanks a hospital patient out of bed onto the floor, causing him permanent paralysis from the waist down.
  • In front of another couple, a man shoots and kills his wife, then places the gun in his mouth and fires. We see the spray of blood shoot up from the back of his head.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The scene where a man steps into traffic and is hit by a car is sudden and shocking.
  • The murder/suicide scene is sudden and intense.
  • Oscar (Peter Coyote) takes full advantage of Mimi's (Emmanuelle Seigner) codependence on him to control, demean, degrade, and psychologically abuse her in ways that may be very disturbing to anyone who has experienced or witnessed similar abuse. Then, after Oscar loses the use of his legs and becomes impotent, Mimi turns the tables and abuses Oscar just as badly.
