Storyline

During World War II when all the men are fighting the war, most of the jobs that were left vacant because of their absence were filled in by women. The owners of the baseball teams, not wanting baseball to be dormant indefinitely, decide to form teams with women. So scouts are sent all over the country to find women players. One of the scouts, passes through Oregon and finds a woman named Dottie Hinson, who is incredible. He approaches her and asks her to try out but she's not interested. However, her sister, Kit who wants to get out of Oregon, offers to go. But he agrees only if she can get her sister to go. When they try out, they're chosen and are on the same team. Jimmy Dugan, a former player, who's now a drunk, is the team manager. But he doesn't feel as if it's a real job so he drinks and is not exactly doing his job. So Dottie steps up. After a few months when it appears the girls are not garnering any attention, the league is facing closure till Dottie does something that ... Written by rcs0411@yahoo.com

Trivia

New York state trooper David Harding played one of Kit's adult sons in the Hall of Fame scene. Within months of the shooting, he was indicted for falsifying evidence in several cases, including a 1989 multiple murder in Ithaca. See more »

Goofs

The car in which Dottie and her husband drive off (presumably to Oregon) has an "A card" sticker for gas rationing. Would they be able to buy sufficient gas to drive to Yellowstone National Park and back to the Midwest during the course of a 7-game World Series, or had time to make the drive, given the 35 mph wartime speed limit? Quotes

Mae Mordabito: [at Tryouts] Ya know they got over a hundred girls here. So some of yous are going home.
Kit Keller: What do you mean some of us?
[Doris throws a fast ball at Kit, which Dottie catches with her bare hands]
Mae Mordabito: OK, some of them are going home.
Doris Murphy: Hey, how'd you do that?

A fitting,funny tribute
24 March 2002 | by SmileysWorldSee all my reviews

Little did I know as a child that a professional women's baseball league even existed. That just goes to prove what little recognition these ladies have gotten over the years. This film finally pushes them over the top in terms of getting that recognition.Excellent perception and direction by Penny Marshall here in recreating this long ago time;a time of war when the nation needed the simple pleasures of life more than ever,to help them escape,at least temporarily, the horrors of the goings on overseas. With most of the male professional ball players overseas, our beloved women were called upon to fill the void, and boy did they ever fill it!It makes me wish, in some ways, that I could have been there to see it all.A fine comic performance here by Tom Hanks,as Jimmy Dugan, the somewhat reluctant and ignorant(at least,at first) manager of the Rockford Peaches. Outstanding performances as well from Madonna,Rosie O'Donnell,Geena Davis, and Lori Petty.A finer tribute could not have been made.Well done.
