Storyline

FBI trainee Clarice Starling works hard to advance her career, while trying to hide/put behind her West Virginia roots, of which if some knew, would automatically classify her as being backward or white trash. After graduation, she aspires to work in the agency's Behavioral Science Unit under the leadership of Jack Crawford. While she is still a trainee, Crawford asks her to question Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a psychiatrist imprisoned, thus far, for eight years in maximum security isolation for being a serial killer who cannibalized his victims. Clarice is able to figure out the assignment is to pick Lecter's brains to help them solve another serial murder case, that of someone coined by the media as Buffalo Bill, who has so far killed five victims, all located in the eastern US, all young women who are slightly overweight (especially around the hips), all who were drowned in natural bodies of water, and all who were stripped of large swaths of skin. She also figures that Crawford chose ... Written by Huggo

Goofs

Dr. Lecter says that Buffalo Bill has probably applied without success to all three major centers for sexual reassignment surgery. One does not apply directly to such a surgical center. First, one must get an appointment with a gender clinic, where, after evaluation, a psychiatrist could diagnose them with gender dysphoria and recommend that they begin the transition process, which may include dressing as the opposite gender and beginning hormone replacement therapy. Only after at least a year of doing so would a doctor recommend a patient for surgery, which requires a letter from two psychiatrists. See more »

Alternate Versions

This film was originally released by the now-defunct Orion Pictures Corporation. After Orion went bankrupt, all their films, as well as many sequel rights, were acquired by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which produced the sequel, Hannibal, and prequel, Red Dragon. When The Silence of the Lambs was re-issued on video in 1999, and on DVD in 2001, it was released by MGM home video. As a result, their corporate logo now precedes the Orion Pictures logo. A Grand Thriller
12 July 2003 | by SargebriSee all my reviews

This is definitely a film that proves you don't need tons of blood and gore to have a good suspense film. Anthony Hopkins performance as the deranged genius Lecter earned him a well deserved Academy Award and the same was true of Jodie Foster's performance as Clarice Starling. This film should go down in history as one of the greatest suspense films in the history of cinema.
