Wesley Snipes on art, excellence and life after prison: 'I hope I came out a better person'

Wesley Snipes on art, excellence and life after prison: 'I hope I came out a better person'
After a fall as dramatic as any of his film roles, Snipes is back on track, starring with Eddie Murphy in the long-awaited Coming 2 America. He discusses police brutality, Michael Jackson – and his secret society

Wesley Snipes seemed to have everything in the 90s and early 00s. He was a film star, gifted, gorgeous, chiselled from top to bottom. Box office gold. There seemed to be no genre he couldn’t star in: thrillers (detective Thomas Flanigan in King of New York), action movies (drug baron Nino Brown in New Jack City), sports comedies (basketball hustler Syd Deane in White Men Can’t Jump), LGBT comedies, arthouse romances (commercials director Max Carlyle in One Night Stand) and dramas (architect Flipper Purify in Jungle Fever). In 2004, his salary was a reported $13m for producing and starring in the third Blade blockbuster, Blade: Trinity. Snipes could not have been flying much higher.

‘Les Misérables’: French Cinema Is Insular, and Director Ladj Ly Wants to Shake It Up
Ladj Ly’s racially charged feature debut, “Les Misérables,” which won the 2019 Jury Prize at Cannes, was selected by France’s Oscar committee as the country’s submission for the international feature film competition. It was a historical decision, as it marked the first time that France chose a film by a black filmmaker to represent it at the Academy Awards.

Now officially nominated in the category, should it win, it would set another record: the first time that a film by a black filmmaker has won the Oscar in the seven decades the category has existed.

Ly faces stiff competition, with Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” almost guaranteed to win the category. However, Ly understands the context of his nomination for his career, but for other black French filmmakers as well.

“You can probably count the number of black filmmakers in France on one hand, because French cinema is

10 Directors to Watch: Oscar Contender Ladj Ly Confronts the System in ‘Les Misérables’

10 Directors to Watch: Oscar Contender Ladj Ly Confronts the System in ‘Les Misérables’
Oscar-shortlisted French director Ly, who emigrated from Mali to the outskirts of Paris as a child, found his vision of cinema shaped by American films. “I watched a lot of films with African-American actors,” he says. “I watched ‘Menace II Society,’ ‘New Jack City’ and ‘Boyz n the Hood.’ I watched Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese films. Those films really inspired me growing up.”

When he was 17 years old, Ly bought his first camera. With no formal training, he taught himself on the job, shooting short films about life in Montfermeil, the Paris suburb where Victor Hugo’s “Les Misérables” took place — and the setting of Ly’s film of the same name. It premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

For more than 20 years, Ly has been making documentaries highlighting the problems of life in

his neighborhood. Ly has filmed the tensions between law enforcement and civilians. With “Les Misérables,

Audiences love to see films like New Jack City come out since they usually feature a cast that’s worth watching and a story that’s worth telling. No matter how much of it is fiction the idea gets across that this is a great movie for the times since it’s talking about a very real problem in a way that might not seem as real or as gritty as possible so as to spare the sensibilities of those watching. Honestly, New Jack City was a hard film to really own up to since it didn’t paint a lot of people in

When Sun-Block Spoiled Greatness: Blade is 20 Years Old

Tom Jolliffe looks back at Blade, after it turns 20…

I remember it well. I remember it like it was only 10 years ago in fact, but it’s not. It has been 20 years. A tired action genre. A few brief flashes of excitement here and there. Schwarzenegger and Stallone were tiring and in their attempts to branch out, were doing largely dreadful films. Van Damme and Seagal were now disappearing into straight to video obscurity. Nic Cage was a one man saviour of the genre, between The Rock, Face/Off and Con Air.

Still, prior to The Matrix flipping everything on its head, audiences wanted something a bit different. Something potentially genre-redefining. Then came Blade and it came so, so close. For one thing, it would spark off the potential for Marvel hit movies and came after Batman (for the rivals) had hit a disastrously campy iceberg in the form of Batman and Robin.
