"Weird Al" Yankovic had a brief role as a thug who holds the police at the precinct at gunpoint. In the scene, he says, "Okay, Pigs, say your prayers!" followed by Frank slamming the door open and knocking Yankovic's character to the floor. Yankovic said it took more than twenty takes to get the scene done, and that after about sixteen takes, his leg had turned "a nice shade of purple." The stunt coordinator asked Yankovic at that point if he wanted to wear some padding. Yankovic also recalled that O.J. Simpson felt sorry for him.

Lloyd Bochner spoofed his own performance from The Twilight Zone: To Serve Man (1962). In a panicked crowd scene late in the film, Bochner can be seen carrying a large book with "To Serve Man" on the cover, and shouting to passersby, "It's a cookbook! It's a cookbook!", which was the shocking reveal in the episode.

The nuclear device that Lieutenant Frank Drebin trips over towards the end of the movie is a similar device used in Goldfinger. There are additional lights in the cabinet, and the display is made up of numeric LEDs (LEDs were not available when the Bond movie was made; they used vacuum tube displays).

The love scene between Leslie Nielsen and Priscilla Presley involving a pottery wheel is a send-up of a similar, more romantic scene in Ghost (1990) starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. That movie was directed by Jerry Zucker, co-creator of The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977), Airplane! (1980), and Police Squad! (1982) with his brother David Zucker, who directed this movie.

The paper that Frank hands to Hapsburg during the dinner party which shows the photo of Hector Savage (Anthony James) is a page taken from the 1960 yearbook of Myrtle Beach High School, South Carolina. Anthony was a member of that graduating class. Although his picture was a picture of Anthony at the time of this movie, the rest of the photos were actual classmates of his back in 1960.

The book passed to Dr. Meinheimer (Richard Griffiths), "Strokin' the Love Muffin", is in fact the original "The A-Team" book by Charles Heath. While the two pages are clearly visible, only the top paragraph of the second page (191) is edited to tailor that particular scene, which is read by Dr. Meinheimer word for word. The remainder of the pages are accurate to the rest of the book.

The ship "Hapsburg Valdez," and the television commercial making fun of the hiring process of tanker captains (breathalyzers, urine tests, et cetera), are references to the Exxon Valdez oil spill, which took place on March 24, 1989. The spill resulted in eleven million gallons of crude oil being dumped into the sea. Exxon Valdez was the original name, followed by Sea River Mediterranean, and eventually just Mediterranean of the tanker owned by the former Exxon Shipping Co., a division of the former Exxon Corporation. It gained widespread infamy when the tanker, bound for Long Beach, California, Captained by Joseph Hazelwood, hit Prince William Sound's Bligh Reef and spilled an estimated eleven million U.S. gallons (forty-one million liters) of crude oil. This has been recorded as one of the largest spills in U.S. history, and one of the largest ecological disasters.

Robert Goulet played Priscilla Presley's villainous love interest in this movie. In 1974, her ex-husband Elvis Presley shot his television because Robert Goulet appeared on it. That television is now a collector's item.

In the theatrical release, when Robert Goulet fell out of the window at the end of the movie, while he was screaming you hear his scream turn into him singing "on a clear day," from his song "On A Clear Day (You Can See Forever)," followed by his landing unscathed only to be attacked by a lion. In the video and television releases, he does not sing during the fall.
