‘The Romanoffs’ Recap: Scared Silly
A review of “The House of Special Purpose,” this week’s The Romanoffs, coming up just as soon as I blame it on the Method…

“I’m sorry, I… I feel like I’m losing my mind here.” -Olivia

In conversations with fellow critics about this series, “The House of Special Purpose,” which follows an actress who is being tortured by her director, has either been their favorite or least favorite of the three episodes Amazon provided us in advance. No middle ground. I fall in the latter group, though

Why I'll miss staying up to ridiculous hours to review 'Mad Men'

Why I'll miss staying up to ridiculous hours to review 'Mad Men'
Note: This is going to be the most inside-y of inside baseball columns, but so many people over the years have asked me what it's like to write about "Mad Men" — particularly in these later, screener-less seasons — that I wanted to put together some personal memories of the experience. If you understandably just want to read about the show itself, I've written a ton, including reviews of every single episode (the first three seasons on my old blog, everything else here at HitFix), picks for the best episodes, an essay on the distinct moment in TV history in which "Mad Men" debuted, recent interviews with Matthew Weiner and Jon Hamm, and even an entire chapter of my book (which will have an updated version in the fall to discuss the end of this show and "Breaking Bad"). This Sunday night should be the last time for a very long time

Mad Men season 6 episode 8 review: The Crash

Review Frances Roberts 20 May 2013 - 19:00

Drugs, lies and tap-dancing feature in this week's surprising, ominous Mad Men, proving the show still has tricks up its sleeve...

This review contains spoilers.

6.8 The Crash

Writing for a character as inscrutable as Don Draper must be a mixed blessing. While Draper’s stylish, distant demeanour lends itself to delivering gnomic dialogue and posing for cool silhouettes against the Manhattan skyline, when it comes to showing the audience what’s going on inside TV’s most unreachable leading man, you find yourself painted into a corner.

Enter the pharmaceutical get-out clause, a temporary crisis that lets Draper escape his closed off personality and allows us to see something of what’s underneath. It’s the plot device that forces Draper to become uncharacteristically voluble and turn to face the camera for once. The Crash used a workplace amphetamine shot, but past glimpses into

Mad Men Recap: You’re Pretentious, You Know That?

Mad Men Recap: You’re Pretentious, You Know That?
Like a lot of Mad Men episodes, “The Crash” needs to be seen twice — not to unlock any subtleties of structure or tone, but to get over the idea that it’s really “about” much of anything. I guess you could make the case that it captures that post-mlk-rfk feeling that the entire world was losing its mind, or felt as if it was. Nearly early every moment feels knowingly off-kilter. A couple of the guest characters (the I Ching–obsessed, token-tossing hippie chick who ends up screwing Stan, and the African-American burglar posing as Don Draper’s mammy) feel like nightmare figures: manifestations of a rattled and deeply threatened collective Wasp id. There are moments when the episode threatens to turn into another “Guy Walks Into an Advertising Office,” “Mystery Date,” or “Dark Shadows,” to name three Mad Men in which the terrors of sixties history intruded on the

'Warm Bodies': Which supernatural is right for you?
It’s time for Mystery Date: Supernatural Edition! While the whole vampire craze may be drawing to a close (Twilight: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 comes out on DVD March 2) 2013 is still on track to be a huge year for those that love the supernatural. Apologies to viewers who enjoy their zombies more in the style of Walking Dead, but it’s looking like the biggest trend is more romance, less death and destruction. Warm Bodies, in theaters today, centers around a love story between zombie R. and a human, Julie. It’s a great read – and surprisingly, in between the killing and the brain eating,
