How ‘Tower’ Demonstrates the Possibilities of Art and Healing in Nonfiction Filmmaking — Consider This
In the documentary short “Speaking is Difficult,” director Aj Schnack marries B-roll shots of public spaces where mass shootings took place with voiceover of the events’ 911 calls. It captures the mundanity of grocery parking lots, main streets, schools invaded by extreme violence, and how quickly life appears, superficially, to return to normal.

Keith Maitland’s “Tower” is about the trauma that persists and how it’s sometimes possible to unearth and heal those wounds.

In broad daylight on August 1, 1966, the Austin campus of the University Texas was host to the United States’ first mass shooting at a school. From atop a tower in an open courtyard, sniper Charles Whitman held what was the equivalent of five city blocks of the campus hostage for 96 minutes, killing 17 people and wounding 32 others.

If you film 'Thor: Ragnarok' in public, you're gonna get spoilers

If you film 'Thor: Ragnarok' in public, you're gonna get spoilers
Sometimes a movie films in utter secrecy. And sometimes it films on the public streets of Brisbane, Australia. Can you guess which one of those options Thor: Ragnarok chose? Whether you knew the latest Thor movie is currently in production because Marvel co-president Louis D’Eposito announced it on Twitter or because you follow the latest Taylor Swift gossip, the point is Asgardians are down under in the land of Hemsworths. Since then, director Taika Waititi has been filming scenes outside. In broad daylight. Which meant it was only a matter of time before photos made their way online. Warning: Spoilers For Thor: Ragnarok Beyond This Point. It began innocently enough. Marvel themselves teased the return of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) as dysfunctional brothers. New 'Doctor Who' monster looks like it stepped right out of Bioshock
Ahead of Series 9, the BBC and “Doctor Who” are asking, “What’s that in the shadows?” The subject of that query was fans' first look at a brand-new alien creature, albeit hidden in shadows. Well, it looks kind of like a metal trashcan with a space heater inside of it but what do I know? Image Credit: BBC via RadioTimes I wasn't the only one squinting (and adjusting tones in Photoshop) to make out any details in the vaguely named "Block 3 Monster." Rather than ruin our collective eyesight, the BBC released a much better look at the creature. Image Credit: BBC via RadioTimes. In broad daylight, s/he looks a Big Daddy prototype from the "Bioshock" video game series mated with a Yo Gabba Gabba creature. It could be a coincidence. Or it could be another send up to a fellow sci-fi franchise. After all, Garrus Vakarian of "Mass Effect" showed up last season.

Sons Of Anarchy Series Finale Review: “Papa’s Goods” (Season 7, Episode 13)

After seven seasons replete with bloodshed, tears and enough drama to fuel a telenovela, Sons Of Anarchy’s reign has finally come to an end. Attempting to sum up whether or not creator Kurt Sutter did the show justice isn’t the biggest query at stake here. The more important question to be answered is: did he see off the boys of Samcro with the showy farewell they all deserved? Whatever that may be.

Whether or not you have become repulsed by Jax’s behaviour in the last… well, since the show began, his devil-may-care attitude has wooed half the ladies of Charming and a flock of dedicated Soa fans. With that in mind, it stands to reason that his inevitable romanticized downfall would be squeezed for every inch of drama. The decision to over-extend this season to practically 90-minute episodes has been lambasted, but for the finale – all is forgiven,

5 Things Adam West Did Better Than Other Batmen

Adam West is quoted as saying that three B's shaped the '60s: Bond, The Beatles, and Batman. Curiously enough, West was offered the role of James Bond for the film On Her Majesty's Secret Service but turned it down, wanting a British actor to have the role instead. While West may have been right about the '60s, I might expand and say those three B's have shaped our pop culture to this day. Fifty years later we still get excited about all three, but over the years some have forgotten the impact West's Batman truly had on the series. While we may not have a Batman logo etched on our back molar like West does, we do remember some things his Batman did better than most.

Christian Bale's Batman believed that darkness was his ally. For West's it was but an acquaintance. Most

Revenge Of The Green Dragons Review

While Revenge Of The Green Dragons is supposed to be a historically relevant glimpse into the Queens gang scene circa 1980, it feels very much like a cartoonish riff off of Walter Hill’s The Warriors. The Scorsese-produced film comes with a certain pedigree since Wai-keung Lau (Infernal Affairs) represents half of the directorial duo, joined by Andrew Loo, yet the clunky narrative scripted by Loo and Michael Di Jiacomo fails to properly grasp the thematic gravity of illegal immigration. The Green Dragons are the baddest mamma jammas this side of Queens, yet their foolishly ambitious nature only paves a cinematic road towards random gang shootouts, weightless acting and a faulty focus on pulpy action over more emotionally jarring factors about immigrants chasing the American dream.

The story follows Sonny (Justin Chon) and Steven (Kevin Wu), two brothers who are inducted into a Chinese street gang at a very early age.

Tiff 2013 Review: Witching & Bitching Is Vulgar Auteurism At Its Most Manic

They are in every city along the main tourist drags, those living statues of celebrities, comic book characters and horror icons just standing there, silently hoping for your loose change.  In Álex De La Iglesia's latest bit of mayhem, they're not standing still for long; nothing here is ever silent for long. In broad daylight on the crowded streets of Madrid, Jesus Christ, a Toy Soldier, Spongebob Squarepants, the Invisible Man and possibly Mickey & Minnie Mouse knock off a "We Buy Your Gold" shop. In a haze of sweat and bullets, they make off with the booty of a couple thousand gold rings in a hijacked Taxi. Painted head to in silver body spray, Jesus, with a shotgun to match his chrome skin and thorny...

"Lost Girl" Recap (3.11): The Witches of Faewick

Tags: Lost GirlLost Girl recapsIMDb

We open with a scream. Not the haunting inner scream of one’s id, crying out instinctively for love into the gaping abyss of one’s broken heart but finding only shrill echoes to comfort it against the hollow loneliness. Or, uh, something. No, more like blondes in the baby doll dresses walking alone into the woods kinds of screams. Or guys in leather masks with chainsaws kinds of screams. Or psychos behind shower curtains kinds of screams. Yes, it’s scary movie night and Bo and Kenzi are screaming advice in vain at the television. Like never pick up the phone because the call is always coming from the inside of the house. Always.

In between handfuls of popcorn, Bo and Kenz talk a little about The Break/Not Quite Up. Kenzi tells her the cold hard truth, she sucks at coupledom. But then

10 Directors Who Need To Make A Horror Movie

The master himself is all too ready to evaluate my cinematic opinion.

There are far too many bizarre and humorous anecdotes attached to my horror film viewing experience. As a rather anxious and neurotic child I did not take to watching Scream at a friend’s house in fourth grade very well, nor did I appreciate seeing Silent Hill as a first date when I was in high school. Until I began film studies in college, I’d sworn off the genre not out of elitist judgment but as a result of a panicky, overactive imagination that made surprise appearances at 3am.

Then I realized how much I effing loved the genre for that exact reason: horror film is so entertaining and valuable because of its inherent ability to shake you out of complacency, and if you’re anything like me, it’ll drive you to install a nightlight in

‘Jackie Brown’: The joy of great character development

There is a lot to be said about writer-director Quentin Tarantino’s success as a filmmaker. His films have all been met with some degree of critical appreciation and have all made some decent money at the box office. What’s more, and this might be his true legacy, his projects have sparked the imaginations of fellow filmmakers and film fans the world over. Truth be told, this last aspect may not be viewed solely in positive light considering how, especially in the 1990s, a multitude of so called imitators created their own versions of Tarantino flicks. However, few were those who captured the real spirit of cinema’s new darling. In fact, the style of the pictures is what got to people most: the clothing (which often looks great), the soundtracks (which often sound great) and the snappy dialogue (which many wish they could come up with) are what impressed most.
