Storyline

"Dear Video" is a black epistolary comedy which stars some of the finest actors from the former Yugoslavia. The film is constructed around the video 'correspondence' between two branches of a family, one living in Germany and pursuing 'modern' life and the other one living in a little village in Yugoslavia clinging to tradition. Through the home video 'letters' sent back and forth, petty jealousies, love liaisons and financial squabbles drive the family to the brink of war, a situation that reflects the collapsing state of affairs in what was then Yugoslavia. Probably the last truly Yugoslavian movie (that was good)
6 December 2013 | by MarkOfCaineSee all my reviews

Fun plot, fun characters, and excellent acting.

This little surreal comedy/drama revolves around two brothers and their respective families, one in Yugoslavia (Serbia, to be precise) and another in Germany.

One day they get a great idea to communicate through video recordings, that they send to each other via post.

This triggers an unexpected turn of events, loaded with trivial sibling rivalry, jealousy and vanity, all pictured through black humor.

All in all a solid flick, great actors and a good scenario.

Directing is also great, silently integrating a bit of the atmosphere of 1991 (starting of the breakup of SFRY).

A must see for all fans of a Yugoslavian movie scene.
