Blu-ray Review: Slumber Party Massacre II and III Double Feature

Nearly three years after releasing the original Slumber Party Massacre as a special edition Blu-ray, Scream Factory has finally put a double feature disc of its two sequels: 1987’s Slumber Party Massacre II and 1990’s Slumber Party Massacre III. It’s something of a good news/bad news situation.

The good news is that Slumber Party Massacre II is really crazy and really fun. The bad news is that part 3 is not. Picking up the subversive campiness of where Amy Holden Jones’ original left off, Slumber Party Massacre II writer/director Deborah Brock dials up the weirdness and adds an abstract, hallucinatory bent to the first sequel. It’s bigger and stranger, more colorful and experimental; I’m reminded of the leap from Prom Night to Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II, except that the original Slumber Party Massacre is a better movie than Prom Night.

Crystal Bernard (TV’s Wings) plays Courtney,

Shark Tank: Will Illumibowl’s Toilet Bowl Night Light Impress the Sharks?

Be ready when Mother Nature calls! That’s what the premise is behind one of the pitches on Shark Tank tonight. The creators of Illumibowl hope that even the Sharks can relate to using the toilet in the dark. The pitch goes something like this: Each night, millions of people wake to the call of nature and they stumble out of bed into the bathroom and they are faced with a terrible choice: turn on the light and risk waking themselves up or go it alone in the dark. Doesn’t sound like either option is appealing. So what does one do?

Stockholm Film Festival: Turkey's Oscar Entry Soars

Glenn has been attending the 25th Stockholm Film Festival as a member of the Fipresci jury. Here he is to discuss Turkey’s 2014 Oscar submission, Winter Sleep.

There’s a moment over an hour into Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Winter Sleep where two of the main characters finally strip away the societal niceties that their relatively comfortable existences requires of them and they reveal their true feelings about one another. Some might suggest that the scene, fraught with simmering tension and explosive drama, comes too late in the picture – it effectively kicks off the second act – and that Ceylan’s film could have easily had 20 or 30 minutes shaved from its runtime. I wouldn’t argue that these people are wrong; at 196 minutes, Winter Sleep is the one percent of film lengths of 2014 (only Lav Diaz’s Norte is a longer new release if I am remembering correctly). Still, I found

Pink Floyd is releasing their first new album in 20 years

Pink Floyd is releasing their first new album in 20 years
Pink Floyd is dropping their first new album in 20 years this fall. "The Endless River" will by out via Columbia on Nov. 10, and is a whopping 18 songs long. The evolution of the album, according to a release, started with the 1993 "Division Bell" recording sessions, with David Gilmour, Rick Wright and Nick Mason. It's described as a "four-sided instrumental album" plus one song with lyrics, "Louder Than Words,” words written by Gilmour's wife, novelist Polly Samson. Keyboardist Wright died in 2008, and the finishing of this album was "a tribute" to him, according to Gilmour and Mason. Wrote Gilmour: "'The Endless River' has as its starting point the music that came from the 1993 Division Bell sessions. We listened to over 20 hours of the three of us playing together and selected the music we wanted to work on for the new album. Over the last year we've added new parts, re-recorded others and

Bondarchuk prepared to bleep obscenities
Leading Russian actor-director-producer Fyodor Bondarchuk has indicated that he is prepared to bleep out the obscenities in Valeria Gai Germanika’s new film Yes And Yes (Da I Da) to ensure its Russian theatrical release.

Speaking at a press conference at the Moscow International Film Festival (Miff) this morning (June 25) ahead of the European premiere of Yes And Yes in the Main Competition, Bondarchuk said that he ¨hoped¨ to get a distribution certificate for the film tomorrow.

“I don’t know about the cursing, but we have agreed to put in bleeps if there is no other way [for the film to be released] if the new obscenity law applies to this film,” said Bondarchuk.

“We are still waiting for clarification about the situation for films made before when the law comes into effect on July 1. I will know more on Thursday.”

Glastonbury 2013: the best sets to watch online

From Nick Cave to Azealia Banks via Haim and the Arctic Monkeys, a round-up of this year's best performances, which are available to stream now

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds

As the Rolling Stones' headline slot proved, Glastonbury's always been a safe bet for any band with a collective age of somewhere in the region of 900, but Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds' swaggering, uncomfortably intense set made most of the younger bands seem curmudgeonly in comparison. The highlight of their performance arrives around the 52-minute mark when Nick Cave descends into the front of the crowd for Stagger Lee and shares an oddly moving moment with a young lady perched on someone's shoulders dressed all in white, with Cave roaring "I've come to take you down". She may or may not have been sacrificed afterwards. Click here to watch the video

‘Night Light’ Video: Jessie Ware, Leg-Dancing, Mesh Hats
"My mom offers to pay me money every week to take it out. I say no just to spite her. I'm sure I am going to have to take it out soon because I am not a teenager. But I quite like fighting my mom still — and she keeps offering me more and more money. I'm just going to see how high I can take it." That is breakout U.K. soul singer Jessie Ware talking to Pitchfork on the subject of her nose ring; we mention it here because it is charming, and also because the nose ring is once again on display in the video for "Night Light," off her debut album Devotion. Also featured: human-sized sock puppets, waterless synchronized swimming, curtain dancing, mesh cloche hats, and general coolness. Actually, Jessie Ware is cool enough at this point that she could probably accept the thousand quid from her
