Storyline

A gang of thieves has pulled a huge jewel heist, but has had to hide out in a tiny South African village posing as members of a fraternal order called The Oddballs. As they wait for their buyer to arrive and take the jewels off their hands, they receive word that the Grand Wizard of the Oddballs is planning to make an inspection visit that threatens to blow their cover. Adding to the confusion, the son of a bushman chieftain has arrived in town seeking a "wizard" who can restore water to his people, and of course he assumes that the Oddballs, dressed in the costumes of their order, are the wizards he wants. The question is -- why make this movie?
1 November 2001 | by See all my reviews

In the beginning, I wanted to like this film, I really did. It started off a little like "The Gods Must Be Crazy" with an African tribesman trying to find the wizards that could repair his broken washer to a well. Throw in some crooks and I thought it would turn into a nice little film. Instead the screenwriter decided to stop there and let the story lurch along. First of all, I didn't know what the Oddballs were until well into the movie. Secondly, Burgess Meredith acted like he was comatose and Tullio Moneta was terrible. The chase at the end was pretty bad and all attempts at humor were amateurish. The ending was VERY unbelievable, it seemed like the filmmakers had no clue on how to end it so they just put in everyone's happy and let it be. Also, it was hard to believe that Don Ameche could ever be as ruthless as he was supposed to be. Pretty bad.
