Sex & Nudity

  • A mild sexual reference that children will not understand.
  • A husband and wife are shown in bed together. It's implied that they had sex the night prior, but nothing graphic/explicit is seen or heard.
  • Married men are shown spending time with their girlfriends.
  • A woman grabs a man's crotch, they kiss and he grabs her bottom.
  • It's implied that 2 people have an affair. We do not see this happen, we only hear that they were having an affair.
  • A woman hides a gun in her underwear so that no one will find it. No nudity, meant for laughs.

Violence & Gore

  • Several scenes of shocking violence.
  • One character is something of a loose cannon and violence usually occurs around him.
  • A man with blood all over his torso is running and screaming claiming he's been shot. There is also blood all over his hands.
  • There are several instances where people get roughed up by gangsters.
  • Goodfellas is widely regarded as one of the most realistic and unflinching gangster films ever made. The violence portrayed is quite realistic and portrayed as cold and even brutal at times. This is definitely one of Martin Scorsese's most violent films, next to Casino, The Departed and Taxi Driver.
  • A man is killed by having an ice pick shoved into the back of his head that is graphically impaled which is very gross and disturbing.
  • A man is bashed once on the head with a wine bottle. He has a slightly bloody bandage afterwards.
  • A father hits his son twice and whips his back with a belt 5 times. The boy has a somewhat bruised face after.
  • A gangster held in the trunk of a car is stabbed and shot several times in the upperbody. He gasps briefly and bloody wounds are shown for a second. His face and part of his torso are blood-soaked for a few seconds.
  • A man hits another man's face with a gun eleven times. He grunts in pain and blood is seen on his face from a distance.
  • Two gangsters beat another gangster. One clubs him with a pistol on the head/face offscreen and the other stamps on his head, we see fleeting glances of his boot crunching onto his face. The victim is partly unconscious, although the pistol whipping causes brief blood spray. His face is then seen mostly covered in blood, and part of his suit is bloodied.
  • Three men dig up a rotting corpse. Graphic details are briefly seen. One man vomits due to the stench of rotting flesh.
  • A man is shot in the foot with blood spurts; he winces briefly and a bloody wound is seen for a second.
  • A gangster is shot in the head; blood spews from the wound briefly. He falls over and blood pools beneath him for a few seconds.
  • A man is swiftly killed by six gunshots to the chest with a pistol. Blood appears on his shirt.
  • A man yips as his face is slammed against a car seat 5 times, and then punched 3 times. Blood is visible on his eyes, nose, and mouth. His face is then seen badly bruised in black-and-white for a few seconds. Two men then threaten to feed him to lions.
  • A man and his wife are shown dead in a car with bloody bullet wounds momentarily. Some blood is splattered across the windows.
  • A man is shot in the head. A lot of blood splatters on a bed. A man is stabbed in the back of the head with an ice pick. He gasps and dies.
  • Two bloody corpses are found in a garbage truck. A frozen corpse if found hanging from a hook in the back of a meat packing truck.


  • Constant, and pervasive throughout.
  • 4 uses of "Goddamn" and 2 uses of "damn".
  • 300 uses of "fuck", 22 uses of "shit", 13 uses of "prick", 4 uses of "son of a bitch", 2 uses each of "nigger", "cocksucker", and "dick", and 1 use of "bitch". Also 7 instances of "bastard", 5 instances of "Jesus Christ", 4 uses of "Goddamn", 3 uses of "hell", and 2 uses of "damn".

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Several of the scenes where drugs are being used take place in a kitchen, filled with equipment used to make drugs.
  • Cocaine is snorted a few times. Mostly implied rather than explicit except for scenes in which we see the character's facial reactions.
  • A major character is addicted to drugs such as cocaine, heroin, and quaaludes, and becomes a drug dealer.
  • A scene happens where a frantic women empties a package of cocaine into a toilet. You see the powder.
  • Cops accept bribes of liquor and cigarettes.
  • There is frequent smoking and drinking.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Rated R for strong brutal violence, pervasive strong language, drug use, and some sexuality.
  • A man beats his son as punishment while the mother tries to stop him.
  • Several fatal shootings, stabbings, and beatings are shown with visible blood. This is quite frightening.
  • There are instances of strong and graphic violence.
  • Joe Pesci's character is a raging psychopath, and scenes involving him can be intense as violence is always a possibility.
