Many parts of the story are similar (friends going to Vietnam, getting POWs, coming back totally changed, etc.)
In Yinghung boon sik Mark Gor (Chow Yun-fat) says: "I said something wrong, then there were guns pointing at my head, and ordered me to drink a whole bottle of whisky. I was so scared and Ho drank it all." The exact same thing happens in this film.

Chow Ching-Chuen gets a bullet in the head and suffers from memory loss. In another scene, Yip Man and Chow reunite in Hong Kong for the first time since their escape from Fushan. Shocked at the state of his best friend, Yip tries to confort and make Chow memorize by asking him for and repeat Yip's name in hope for success.
