    • Trivia
The hotel in which Porky has breakfast with Sylvia is actually based in Singapore, not Hong Kong. This can be confirmed by the ending credits that some shots were based in and shot in Singapore.
    • Goofs
When Porky catches up with Ah-Long at the circuit where he practices his racing, Ah-Long is given a Yamaha TZR 250 by Dragon. The next day, Ah-Long competes at the Macau superbike race in a Suzuki GSX-R750. No explanation is given for why Ah-Long changed to a powerful motorcycle (requiring an advanced degree of skill to ride) on such short notice or how he managed to bypass the practice and qualifying sessions and get straight into the front row within that 24-hour period in a powerful motorcycle he doesn't appear to have ridden throughout the film. In reality, as there are other races supporting the event, he would have to have gone through practice and qualifying which would have occurred before the race. Also, how are smaller bikes, such as the Suzuki RGV250, able to qualify at the front row with powerful superbikes (over 750cc such as the Honda VFR750R)?

One of Chow Yun-Fat's best performances.
Chow Yun-Fat gives a heart-rending performance as Ah Long, a single dad struggling to bring up his son amidst crushing working-class poverty in 1980's Hong Kong. The strong bond between father and son is tested when a chance encounter with someone from Ah Long's past changes the course of their lives.

Gritty in its realism, this film pulls no punches in examining the life of an admitted wastrel who wants more than the life of an uneducated laborer for his son but sees no more hope for himself. No matter how heinous his behavior in the past, when his son's happiness is challenged Ah Long shines forth as a man of honor, compassion and love.

Chow Yun-Fat's performance is daring and showcases his brilliant talents. He also has a writer's credit in this film. For those who are dismissive of action films (the genre for which he is best known), this film should make believers of all those who savor finely crafted, razor-sharp characterizations.

5 out of 5 stars. Don't forget to bring along a full box of tissues - this film will leave all but the most jaded in tears.
