Andrew McCarthy was asked to read the script to think about playing the part of Richard. When he read it, he loved the part of Larry, and got that instead.

Richard suggests they go to Jones Beach with all the syringes. This is probably referring to the infamous "Syringe Tide" in 1987-88, when medical waste, including used syringes, washed up on several beaches in New York/New Jersey, costing massive losses in tourist dollars.

In Brat, Andrew McCarthy's novel he talks about the film and it revealed that he actually directed one scene in the film which was for Director Ted Kotcheff's cameo as Jonathan Silverman's father who ruins his date with Catherine Mary Stewart.

According to Andrew McCarthy, the one thing that kept him entertained during the shoot in North Carolina was board games. Since Director Ted Kotcheff left McCarthy alone to improvise when he needed to brought his Monopoly game onto the set and plays off in the scene where he's playing with Terry Kiser in character as Bernie.

After Richard knocks out the man that Bernie fired, he informs Larry, "You can come out now Rambo." First Blood (1982), the first Rambo movie, was also directed by Ted Kotcheff. George Cheung, who plays the gardener, wears a costume similar to the one he wore in Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), in which he was the villain.

While part of the film was shot during a heatwave in New York City, the majority was filmed in North Carolina which was a stand in for the Hamptons, where Bernie's summer beach house is located in the film.

Despite the film's title implying an entire weekend at Bernie's, the movie depicts the characters arriving on the island (home of Bernie's beach house) at 6:30 p.m. on a Friday, and the movie ends around late afternoon/early evening Saturday.
