Fate leaves Chandni shattered as her love Rohit disappears from her life. She meets Lalit and they befriend each other until Rohit knocks on her door.

When she meets Lalit (Vinod Khanna) who is fighting the demons of tragic memories, they both find solace in this new friendship. On the very first meeting itself, the beautiful Chandni and handsome, yet wealthy Rohit fall head over heels in love with each other and the dating begins. When Rohit proposes marriage to Chandni she immediately agrees but Rohit's family disagree since Chandni is not of wealthy grounds. Going against his family's wishes; Rohit engages Chandni. All is well in the beginning for the couple until Rohit meets with an accident and is paralyzed unable to move; then Chandni became the care taker of Rohit much to her shock when one day Rohit misbehave, asks her to forget about him and leave his house which she did. Heart broken and Ill-fated Chandni attempts to move on in live by working as a secretary at an airline service and comes across a kind-heart-ed boss by the name of Laliat Khanna. Chandni finds out that Laliat is another one who have been deprive of his beloved. Laliat introduces Chandni to his mom and she immediately took a liking to the girl and brings forward a proposal of marriage for her son to which Chandni immediately agrees. And then one day Chandni is shocked to see Rohit at her door-step but this time fit and fine and he too sets forward to marry her. Rohit (Rishi Kapoor) meets Chandni (Sridevi) at a wedding of his relative and falls instantly in love with her. Chandni is the daughter of Shiv Prasad (Ram Gopal Bajaj) and her mother Asha (Asha Sharma). The wedding is of Chandni's cousin Neelu and Rohit is the best friend of Neelu's brother, Anand. Rohit gets into all the women functions to secretly photograph Chandni dancing. He is mesmerized with her.

Rohit pursues her relentlessly throughout the wedding functions, until she agrees to date him, and eventually they become engaged to be married. His family is very much against this because of the differences in their social status, but Rohit doesn't care. His family includes parents Armani (Sushma Seth), father Nihaal (Manohar Singh), sister Pooja (Beena Banerjee), Pooja's husband Mahesh (Anupam Kher) who is a house husband and has no respect in the house. Mahesh tells the family that they have no choice in the matter as Rohit is a independent young man, and if they do not agree, he will simply leave the house to start his family with Chandni.

Kiran (Mita Vashisht) is Chandni's sister. At the engagement, Rohit's parents try to ignore Chandni but are forced by Mahesh to acknowledge and bless her. Pooja insults Chandni by gifting her a pair of musical anklets called Ghungroos. Chandni's family notice the treatment meted out, but her father is confident that Rohit will take care of her, and also that nobody can stay mad at Chandni for too long. Chandni and Rohit go for a trip to Switzerland before their marriage and eventually return to India eagerly awaiting their marriage. Rohit loves Chandni and cannot bear to be away from her for even a single moment.

One day, Rohit calls Chandni and asks her to wait for him on the terrace of her house, which she does. As she's waiting the afternoon's silence is broken by the roaring blades of a helicopter and there in the sky Rohit appears who proceeds to shower Chandni in red rose petals.

Rohit disappears from her vision, and she is once again surrounded by silence, though this time she has an unnerving feeling something has happened. Seconds later, Chandni hears the phone ringing and runs to it with trembling excitement knowing it is Rohit. It is not and she is given the news that Rohit is in hospital. Faced with stony expressions of Rohit's family in the hospital she is instantly accused of being the reason why Rohit fell from the helicopter. Pooja says that Chandni loves flowers and hence Rohit collected flowers from the entire city and was showering Chandni with it, when the accident took place.

From there the family's animosity continues towards Chandni as Rohit is paralyzed on his right side (and has a very long road to recovery) and his family continues to berate her. Chandni comes to Rohit's house daily to take care of him (as this is what Rohit wanted), but even her sincere efforts to care for Rohit are insulted by his family. Pooja says that Chandni is clever as she knows if she wins Rohit's heart, all the money will belong to her. Mahesh is the only one who supports Chandni. Chandni continues to put up a happy face for Rohit's sake.

Rohit realizes what Chandni has to go through with his family to be close to him. He knows that Chandni will not leave him by her own will. Finally, in a gut-wrenching sequence, Rohit drives Chandni away for good by accusing her of exactly the same thing. She leaves, not knowing that Rohit, no longer able to stand the taunts towards Chandni, on purpose drove a wedge between them thinking as long as he is in a wheelchair he would never be able to protect her.

Chandni, intent on erasing every memory of Rohit, decides to move to Mumbai in order to turn over a new leaf. She starts working for a travel agency which is headed by Lalit (Vinod Khanna), a handsome and charming man, but like Chandni he too has heartaches of his own hidden deep within. In a short space of time, he falls in love with Chandni and asks her to marry him. She dwells on this question and finally says yes to the exultation of both him and his mother Lata Khanna (Waheeda Rehman).

Coincidentally Lalit, on a business trip in Switzerland, meets Rohit who is there to receive treatment for his paralysis and now no longer needs the wheelchair. The men tell each other their stories and sing with joy of love, not knowing they are both singing about the same girl.

Back in India Rohit shows up one evening at Chandni's door and to her utter amazement he stands up and does a little dance. Both are so overwrought with emotion at seeing each other again that Rohit proposes to her. Chandni remembers Lalit and informs Rohit she now belongs to someone else. Taken aback, Rohit becomes angry and says she will always belong to him, to which Chandni reminds him of that fateful day of their separation and asks him what he would have done if he had been in her place. Rohit mourns the memory and leaves with a regrettable shrug of his shoulders.

As Rohit and Lalit had become such good friends in Switzerland, Lalit invited his friend to his wedding and prior to this day Lalit invites Chandni to meet this new friend. Rohit and Chandni pretend to be strangers to spare Lalit.

On the day of the wedding, Rohit under the influence of alcohol to drown out the memory of the event taking place that day, stumbles down a flight of stairs leading to the wedding procession; but moments before his gaze became locked with Chandni's and both remembered days gone by.

The fall results in a hysterical Chandni screaming for Rohit to be saved and as Lalit looks on, he realizes that Chandni belongs to Rohit and she was the person Rohit was singing about in Switzerland. In the end, he lets Chandni go to be with Rohit
