I remember seeing this movie when it aired on a PBS station in Buffalo, NY. I know that I watched the tape over and over so at the time, and even now, it's a touching film. It is a story of a young woman who is trapped into chosing a "perfect mate". Her mother, of course, has her own ideas, different from her daughters. I am anxiously awaiting it's return to tv! I've got to tape it again. :-)

cute film, worth multiple viewings

I agree with Debbie in GA. I'm not sure why I like this PBS play so much. I think I like the way it presents the idea of what we do because our parents expect us to, what we choose to do in spite of our parents, how sometimes we come full circle to find ourselves.
I also like that the actress had unruly curly hair. And that her mother made comments about it. I don't know if the play/book itself had this character trait, but as another person with unruly, curly hair, I liked that she still moved forward in her life. Even with or in spite of the scattered, indecisive, problematic behaviors we people with unruly curly hair are associated with. :)
I too have a worn out video copy of it from when it played way back when. I check here periodically to see if PBS or someone might decide to make a DVD of it. Or as Debbie requested, play it again so we can refresh our worn out copies!

New York society parents vs their children on what is right for them.

I remember seeing this film back in '89 and immediately loved it. The story itself was a simple and old one: Parents vs children. The theme most likely has been handled better, but for me everything in this film just fit together so well to tell that simple story. Case in point, the cast was a combination of up and comers, along with established ones. The "parents" were all played by veteran soap actors, who got a chance to shine in this film. Boy, did they!! Anytime they were on the screen, I looked for scenery to be eaten up. The young guard led by Leslie Hope (later to star on "24") held their own and made it an enjoyable experience.
The city of New York was on also on display, along with it's well heeled citizens. The film dives into the swallow waters of New York's high society, examining what's expected, acceptable and unacceptable in their small piece of the world. It was like being at a party you wouldn't normally get an invitation to and being the guest of honor.
Unlike the other two reviewers, I am not lucky enough to have video taped this film from the beginning, and worst what part I did have was almost completely taped over by mistake. So, I truly wish PBS does a retrospective and shows it again or releases it on DVD.
