Doctor Sam Beckett led a group of top scientists into the desert to research his theory that a man could time travel within his own lifetime. Unfortunately, in order to save his funding, he was forced to enter the accelerator prematurely and vanished. He then found himself in someone else's body with partial amnesia. His only contact from home is Al, a holographic image only he can see and hear. In the Season 5 opening, "Theorizing that one could time travel within his own lifetime...", the visuals reflect the narration. The narrator says, "Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished...", what is seen is him leaving the imaging chamber after leaping back to New Mexico. See more »
There is an alternate ending to the finale episode "Mirror Image". In the alternate version, the screen does not fade out in the middle of the Leap of Al's young picture. Instead, the Leap completes showing a picture of an older Al. The camera pulls back to show the picture is a family portrait with his wife, Beth, and his four daughters. This version is not for sale by Universal. It was never supposed to leave the editing rooms, but somehow it got out. The only copies available are bootleg copies. See more »
