Storyline

Mike is released from psychiatry, when he agrees with the doctors that the terrible happenings in his past were just in his imagination. But once he's free, he contacts Redge and they team up to hunt down and eliminate the "Tall Man", who plunders the graveyards and steals the corpses with help of his terrible dwarfs. A beautiful strange girl starts to appear in Mike's dreams. He assumes she's in danger and needs their help - will they find her before the Tall Man can do her any harm? Trivia

Don Coscarelli has revealed that some elements of this movie were influenced by Stephen King, specially a few aspects of his novel 'Salem's Lot'. A small part of it at the end, when the characters go out on the road chasing down vampires, gave him the "road movie" idea of Mike and Reggie chasing The Tall Man. See more »

Goofs

(at around 1h 21 mins) As Reg fights with one of the baddies with the chainsaws, as the baddie take a swing with the chainsaw he misses and cuts into the wooden door. You can see that a vertical cut has already been made in the wood though, to help the chainsaw get in and cut. See more »

Alternate Versions

Television version is very heavily cut and removes nearly all the gore. Differences in Television version are:
  • When Mike storms into the Embalming Room in the old abandoned Mortuary, the dead Woman's body has a cloth sheet over her.
  • The Worm creature instantly pops out of the fake Liz's back and the scene where he crawls out is completely cut.
  • Father Meyers' sphere attack is almost completely cut. The shot of his ear flying is removed as is the drilling on his head.
  • Alchemy doesn't remove her top when walking up the stairs with Reggie.
  • When Reggie & Alchemy are having sex in the room in the abandoned Manor, Alchemy has a top on and the shots of her in her panties are completely removed.
  • When Mike & Reggie are chasing The Tall Man in their car and Reggie points his 4-barreled shotgun at The Tall Man in his Hearse, Mike hollars "Shoot Him!" instead of "Shoot The F**ker!"
  • The shot of the Caretaker burning to death in the Furnace is cut completely.
  • The silver sphere drilling the Caretaker's hand in the Hallway is also cut.
  • The gold "Ripper" sphere sawing it's way into the Caretaker's back is cut. However, we do see the gruesome shot of the drill in his mouth after Mike pulls him back.
  • The Tall Man's death is cut very heavily. The shots of his skin peeling off and his eyes exploding are completely removed.

Best Horror Movie Ever?
28 December 2001 | by cb_calSee all my reviews

Phantasm II, with its robed, evil midgets and flying mini-saw wielding spheres, is a film that delivers the goods. We've got a chainsaw dual, cool characters in the Reg-man, Mike, and the Tall Man, and a hell of a lot of action!! Right from the opening title when you hear the atmospheric theme (which is amazing by the way), the tone is set and you know you're in for something special.

With the help of some dark and fantastical imagery, the story is laid out. Mike and Reggie are hunting down the Tall Man, a mysterious undertaker from another world who plunders graveyards and carts the dead off to be crushed into evil slave midgets. The movie strikes a chord with some of its imagery, especially those of embalming. What better way to be reminded of your mortality than to see a cadaver having his mouth sewn shut, and later another being drained of his blood and pumped with chemicals? Perhaps the Tall Man sums it up best when he says, "You think when you die you go to heaven? You come to US!!" It may make you uncomfortable to think about such things, but that is the point, at least partially.

Don't get up to get a beer on this one either. The movie has such a quick pace, you'll be left behind and might miss one of the many memorable scenes: Reggie and Mike walking through an empty graveyard, Father Meyer's encounter with a sphere, the quad-barreled shotgun, or the aforementioned chainsaw dual!!

All in all, Phantasm II is a film that surpasses its predecessor (itself a classic) and takes you on a 90-minute roller-coaster ride. It's fun, action-packed, and above all, highly entertaining.
