Die Hard (1988)
The book is a prequel to The Detective, in which, in a later life, Leland is a private detective. In the film version, The Detective (1968), Leland is played by Frank Sinatra.
In The Detective, sergeant Joe Leland (the John McLain character) is married to an associate professor who had been an orphan and foster child having the psychological disorder of not being able to enjoy sex unless it was illicit. While she loved her husband, her brief affairs resulted in their separation. Leland's focus on his job contributed to the strain on his marriage, but it also led to his promotion to lieutenant. Leland goes up against corruption involving the police department and key New York politicians and businessmen, resulting in the convictions of same, and with him being disliked by many within the department while being admired by others.
