Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Singles Collection Review

Brad Cook reviews Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Singles Collection…

Yes, MST3K Volume Xxxix was the final new volume of Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes, but Shout! Factory has been rereleasing the old Rhino sets and will continue to do so. The Singles Collection has five episodes that were released singly on DVD, or in the case of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, paired with another episode, Manos The Hands of Fate. It also features The Shorts Vol. 3, which has seven shorts that were skewered before the main movies.

Shout! has also thrown in some new bonus features, which is always appreciated since the Rhino releases were typical bare bones sets.

Here’s what you’ll find in this one:

The Crawling Hand: This is a first season episode with Josh Weinstein voicing Tom Servo. In an earlier MST3K set, Kevin Murphy, who played Servo for the rest of the series,

Maybe it’s because this week’s home entertainment releases happen to be falling on the same time as Tax Day, but Tuesday’s Blu-ray and DVD debuts are what my grandfather would refer to as “slim pickins.” In terms of new titles, we’re finally getting the long-awaited sequel to Deep Blue Sea as well as the latest season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 on both formats. Cult film fans will want to nab the new Blu-ray for Day of the Reaper, as it’s a very limited edition release, and for those of you looking to fill in a gap in your personal collections, The Skulls arrives in HD on April 17th, too.

Day of the Reaper

Five women on vacation are stalked by a hooded cannibal killer in the town of Sunnyville Florida. Silly antics and H.G. Lewis-style gore follow the survivors in this camp super-8 epic.

Movie Review – Killing Joan (2018)

Killing Joan, 2018.

Directed by Todd Bartoo.

Starring Jamie Bernadette, Teo Celigo, Erik Aude, David Carey Foster, Daniel Gardner, Dion Basco, Pavle Kujundzic, Casper Andreas, Katarina Leigh Waters, Erin O’Brien, Alexandra Lemus, and Danny Mika.

Mob enforcer Joan Butler (Jamie Bernadette) finds herself betrayed by her erstwhile employer. After being attacked she returns from the dead with otherworldly powers and sets out for revenge against those who wronged her.

Killing Joan is best compared to The Crow, the gothic urban fantasy starring Brandon Lee. Both films see their anti-heroes return from the dead for vengeance wielding dark, vague supernatural powers against their murderers. Sign me up! Unfortunately, Killing Joan plays more like the straight to DVD sequels that the original Crow spawned. The film shows glimmers of a cult hit but succumbs to fumbling acting, clunky storytelling, clammy dialogue and stagey action.

To be fair and clear, credit is

Film Review: ‘The Hurricane Heist’

Film Review: ‘The Hurricane Heist’
As anyone who’s ever set foot on a film shoot can tell you, it’s a minor miracle that any film actually gets made at all. That great films are occasionally made is a major miracle. But perhaps most miraculous of all is the film that manages to be misguided on every conceivable level, on which any reasonable person would have pulled the plug after reading any random page of the script, that somehow still makes it through the agonies of both development and production into a wide release. Tailor-made to appear on a future installment of “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” “The Hurricane Heist” is a film of that third variety, a perfect storm of deliriously watchable inanity and ineptitude. It may be a strong early candidate for the worst movie of 2018, but don’t let that deter you – bad movies this fun don’t come along every day.

Catwoman Writer Is Ashamed of Halle Berry Movie

Catwoman Writer Is Ashamed of Halle Berry Movie
Black Panther is not the first superhero movie to feature a black lead actor or actress, it is however, the first movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe to do so. Social media has been quick to point out that there were black superhero movies before and are wondering why they aren't getting the praise that Ryan Coogler's Black Panther is currently receiving, with one writer wondering where the love for 2004's Catwoman is. Besides the two heroes being black with feline names, there really isn't a comparison, which Catwoman co-writer John Rogers explains in a new social media post.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama praised Black Panther for its black representation and Federalist culture critic D.C. McAllister took to social media to wonder why nobody holds the Halle Berry bomb Catwoman in the same regard. McAllister is more than likely playing devil's advocate, but his question was met by a surprising answer.

Victor Crowley Trailer: The Hatchet Killer Returns to His Swamp
The Hatchet franchise is back in a big, bloody way as the new, full-length trailer for Victor Crowley has arrived online. Director Adam Green pulled a fast one over on horror fans late last year by revealing he filmed Hatchet 4 in secret by screening the movie for a crowd of fans. The movie was then taken on a tour around the country, but now those who couldn't make it out to a screening are getting the chance to see it, as the movie is going to be available in just a few short weeks. To hype up the release, we have a super fun and violent new trailer for Victor Crowley which is loaded down with new footage.

Slasher movies aren't huge right now, but Hatchet, even though the movies are very low-budget and campy, has tried to keep the genre alive. Victor Crowley looks like it's doing a fine job and,

Mystery Science Theater 3000 Renewed For Season 2 By Netflix

Mystery Science Theater 3000 is a comedy series that started up in 1988 and continued running until 1999, thus resulting in a total of 10 seasons on two separate channels. However, it is not what most people would think when the concept of a comedy comes up. Instead, it is centered around protagonists who are forced to watch B movies, with the result that they have to maintain their fraying sanity by making fun of those movies. Suffice to say that the makers of the B movies shown on Mystery Science Theater 3000 have had a rather wide range of
