We're crossing fingers and toes hoping James Gray's "The Lost City Of Z" arrives sometime this year, either in theaters, on the festival circuit, or both. Watch: George Clooney & Julia Roberts Go After The Real Criminals In New International Trailer For 'Money Monster' James Gray has helmed a glossy fashion spot for Lancome, starring Julia Roberts. Julia Roberts' smile could light up any room—or the city of Paris! In a new film for Lancôme's La Vie Est Belle fragrance, the actress's grin brightens her surroundings (literally) and immerses all those around her into a beautifully filmed French fantasy. The actress, 48, stuns in a dress created exclusively for her by Parisian designer Alexandre Vauthier. The sheath was embroidered with 700 Swarovski crystals by Maison Lesage. Her longtime makeup artist Genevieve Herr created the La vie est belle make-up for Lancôme. "La Vie Est Belle," which translates to "life is beautiful," showcases the inner and outer beauty the actress possesses. James Gray, who directed the film,...

The adventures of The Pink Panther are returning to the big screen - albeit in part-animated form...
When it comes to the big screen, think The Pink Panther, and you're either left with the wonderful collection of Peter Sellers-headlined originals, or the not-so-wonderful pair of Steve Martin movies that eventually followed. Sandwiched in-between is Son Of The Pink Panther, which starred Roberto Benigni, who would go on to win a Best Actor Oscar for Life Is Beautiful. The signs were not clear that he would when watching the aforementioned movie.
Now, plans are afoot for a new Pink Panther film, but this time, the emphasis will be on the cartoon character, rather than trying to resurrect Inspector Clouseau again. It'll be a mix of live action and animation, with MGM hiring David Silverman (The Simpsons Movie, Monsters Inc) to direct.

Neapolitan native Paolo Sorrentino given honorary citizenship of capital city after La Grande Bellezza's triumph at the Oscars
The Italian capital has bestowed honorary citizenship on film director Paolo Sorrentino after The Great Beauty – in which Rome is used as a huge, mesmerising film set – triumphed at the Oscars.
Rome's mayor Ignazio Marino said Sorrentino – originally from Naples – deserved the honour for "making Rome and the whole country proud".
He said: "Sorrentino was not born in Rome but he has spoken of it with the love of one who was born and brought up in this city and for this we are grateful."
The Great Beauty (La Grande Bellezza) this month became the first Italian film to win in the foreign language category since Roberto Benigni's Life is Beautiful in 1999.

A week ago the 86th Academy Awards wrapped up what was one of the closest Best Picture races in history. An awards season full of unexpected distractions, pretenders and results came to an end. Many in Hollywood could finally take a deep breath and exhale. No matter how long you've covered the game there is always something to learn over the course of a season. Here are a few lessons that have been percolating in the back of my mind, something to take into account as we (eventually) segue into the next Oscars campaign. And yes, it's really not that far away. Never doubt the Academy's resolve to do the right thing This past weekend I randomly caught up with two Oscar voters who volunteered that they voted for "Gravity" (although they did expect a "12 Years a Slave" outcome). It was a reminder that the vote was likely still as close as we thought,...

“The Great Beauty” on Sunday became the first Italian movie to win the Best Foreign Language Oscar since Robert Benigni’s “Life is Beautiful” captured the prize 15 years ago. That one was a commercial hit, and got a big box-office boost after its win, taking in $21 million of its $57 million North American haul after the Oscars and going on to make nearly $230 million worldwide. That’s not going to happen with director Paolo Sorrentino’s “The Great Beauty,” a modest success with $2.2 million (though nearly $10 million abroad) since opening more than three months ago. Rome (AP) — Italy celebrated Monday after "The Great Beauty" ended the country's 15-year hiatus and won the Oscar for best foreign-language film. But even the film's muse lamented the fallen Rome it portrays and critics including the Vatican said it was just a cheap Fellini knockoff. Paolo Sorrentino's homage to Fellini's "La Dolce Vita" and Rome's seductive decadence has divided Italians, with many critics uncomfortable with its indirect reflection of Italy's political and economic stagnation. But after Sorrentino cemented Italy's place as the country with the most foreign-language Oscars, everyone from the president on down hailed the film as a win for a country struggling through its own existential malaise. "At this time we have to be thinking about other things, and we're doing so," Premier Matteo Renzi tweeted. "But everyone is part of this Italian moment of pride for Sorrentino and 'The Great Beauty.'" The film...

The so-called "McConaissance" is complete now that Matthew McConaughey, shirtless hunk-turned-serious thespian, has won Best Actor for his performance in "Dallas Buyers Club." He did it on his first nomination. While that may seem like an impressive feat, he's actually the 12th to do so in the last quarter-century. That means almost half of the last 25 Best Actor winners have taken home gold on their very first try. The last 11 were: 2011: Jean Dujardin ("The Artist") 2006: Forest Whitaker ("The Last King of Scotland") 2005: Philip Seymour Hoffman ("Capote") 2004: Jamie Foxx ("Ray") 2002: Adrien Brody ("The Pianist") 1998: Roberto Benigni ("Life is Beautiful") 1996: Geoffrey Rush ("Shine") 1995: Nicolas Cage ("Leaving Las Vegas") 1991: Anthony Hopkins ("The Silence of the Lambs...

The academy introduced the Foreign Language Film category in 1956 and Italy claimed a record 10 trophies in this race. However, the last of these was "Life is Beautiful" back in 1998. That 15-year drought ended this year with a win for "The Great Beauty." The 10 films that won the competitive Oscar, out of 29 nominations: 1956: "La Strada" 1957: "Nights of Cabiria" 1963: "8 1/2" 1964: "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" 1970: "Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion" 1971: "The Garden of the Finzi-Continis" 1974: "Amarcord" 1989: "Cinema Paradiso" 1991: "Mediterraneo" 1998: "Life Is Beautiful" From 1947 to 1955, the academy gave out non-competitive honorary awards to foreign language films and Italian fare claimed three of these: -Break- 1947: "Shoeshine" 1949: "The Bicycle Thief" 1950: "T...

We Are What We Are (18)
(Jim Mickle, 2013, Us) Bill Sage, Ambyr Childers, Julia Garner. 103 mins
The story of an archaic backwoods family with very good reasons for their insularity, this spends such a long time laying out its twisted domestic set-up, it's almost as if it's in denial about being a horror movie (remade from a Mexican original). It's a wise decision. If you don't know the family's Big Secret already, it would be a shame to spoil it; let's just say it pulls the story into real shock and gore territory.
The Book Thief (12A)
(Brian Percival, 2013, Us/Ger) Sophie Nélisse, Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson. 131 mins

In the lead-up to the 86th annual Academy Awards on March 2, HitFix will be bringing you the lowdown on all 24 Oscar categories with multiple entries each day. Take a few notes and bone up on the competition as we give you the edge in your office Oscar pool! The eternally problematic Best Foreign Language Film category is one that's well known for springing surprises (usually not very pleasant or popular ones) on Oscar night. For the last couple of years, however, it has followed the script, with universally expected and approved wins for "A Separation" and "Amour." Were they simply too good to lose, or are we seeing the effects of the new voting system, which no longer requires members to see all the nominees before voting? With this year's contest far more competitive -- pitting four acclaimed Cannes premieres against a lower-profile tearjerker -- we may or may not be able to tell.

Twenty-six of our 30 Oscar Experts predict that Globe and BAFTA champ "The Great Beauty" will win Best Foreign-Language Film at Sunday's Oscars. That support gives it leading odds of 2/9. While Italy is the country with the most wins in this category (10), it has not prevailed since "Life is Beautiful" in 1998. However, two other films pose a threat to Italy breaking its losing streak. Belgium's "The Broken Circle Breakdown" has the backing of two Experts – Thelma Adams (Yahoo) and Matt Atchity (Rotten Tomatoes) – and has 12/1 odds. Another pair of Experts – Guy Lodge (Hit Fix) and Claudia Puig (USA Today) – are predicting Denmark's "The Hunt," starring Mads Mikkelsen, which also gets odds of 12/1. Representing Palestine, "Omar" has odds of 50/1. And Cambodia's "The Missing Picture" is the longshot with odds of 100/1. ...

As with films such as Life is Beautiful and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, it’s always fascinating to delve into the horrors of war from a child’s innocent eyes, witnessing such undignified brutality from a naïve, blissfully ignorant perspective. Succinctly highlighting the futility of it all, Brian Percival’s The Book Thief feels suitably watered down, pinpointing death and destruction without feeling torturous. However what transpires is a disengaging, emotionally detached title, as a film that truly struggles to move you, despite the magnitude and poignancy of the themes explored.

Studios and actors have campaigned for Oscars in the past, but never as fervently and persistently as they do these days. Competition is the new norm, and it’s mostly credited to Harvey Weinstein, who politicized Oscar season in the 1990s while working as the head of Miramax Films. Weinstein was rumored to have used coercion, subterfuge, and even bribery to get his films into Oscar contention–the verity of these rumors is debatable; what is known, though, is that he spent exorbitant amounts of money and was somehow able to will Shakespeare in Love, for instance, past Life is Beautiful and Saving Private Ryanin the 1998 Best Picture race.
In order to stay competitive, other distributors had to follow suit and, as a result, Oscar season has become an expensive festival of cocktail parties, dinners, screenings, honorary awards, ad campaigns, and the like. “Buzz” is the word,...

Wildly successful Italian producer Pietro Valsecchi says he's eager for Antonio Banderas to star in biopic about the pontiff's younger years
Antonio Banderas is being tapped by one of Italy's most successful film producers to star as a young Pope Francis in a new biopic.
Pietro Valsecchi, the man behind popular comedies Sun in Buckets (Sole a catinelle) from this year and What a Beautiful Day (Che bella giornata) from 2011, broke the news in a television interview. The proposed film would most likely debut on the small screen in Italy.
Valsecchi's popular films, which star musician and standup comic Checco Zalone and are often directed by Gennaro Nunziante, are lowbrow comedies. But the producer certainly has the financial clout to get the biopic made, with his last two movies currently standing as the highest grossing films of all time in Italy, ahead of Roberto Benigni's 1997 Oscar winner Life is Beautiful.

Twenty-five years ago, a nostalgic Italian film that flopped on release in its own country went on to become a worldwide hit. What was the secret of its success?
• Interview with Salvatore Cascio
• Cinema Paradiso and the rise of the postcard-arthouse movie
Twenty-five years on, it seems extraordinary that a critically underperforming Italian movie – a nostalgic, sentimental movie about moviegoing, to boot – by an unknown 32-year-old director should, after flopping on initial release in its own country, have gone on to win the Grand Prix at Cannes and the best foreign film Oscar for 1989, and become one of the most successful foreign-language movies of all time.
Stephen Woolley, whose Palace Pictures was responsible for the UK release of Giuseppe Tornatore's Cinema Paradiso, remembers the first time he saw it at an unofficial screening at Cannes, on the recommendation of Harvey Weinstein, whose Miramax company had at that time a...

• Salvatore Cascio: 'Cinema Paradiso is about the power of dreams'
• Cinema Paradiso: watch the trailer for the 25th anniversary edition
From the start, Cinema Paradiso carries itself like one of the classics its adorable scamp gazes at, open-mouthed, from the projection room. It has an adorable scamp, for starters – and plenty besides: the timeless Sicilian locations, the Felliniesque social carnival, the thunderbolt love affair, humanism lashed about as freely as olive oil. Giuseppe Tornatore's film is a cosy passeggiata down a celluloid Möbius strip looping art into life. When it arrived in the Us in February 1990 – all gilded sequences and grand themes – it seemed like the distillation of the idea of classic foreign cinema.

It's been 15 years since the release of "American History X" (on October 30, 1998), and to this day, the movie stands as a riveting and brutal drama about the persistence of white-supremacist racism in America. It cemented Edward Norton's reputation as the premier Method actor of his generation, and it included at least one scene (the infamous curb-stomp sequence) that's been copied by everyone from "The Sopranos" to "Family Guy."
Yet to this day, many viewers still don't know the often even more dramatic story that went on behind the scenes of the film, in which first-time feature director Tony Kaye fought with Norton and distributor New Line over the final cut of the film. He ultimately filed a $200 million lawsuit because he preferred to be credited as Humpty Dumpty rather than allow the studio's cut to be released under his name. Las Vegas (AP) — A cadre of volunteers and entrepreneurs are putting the finishing touches on what they hope will be downtown Las Vegas' debutant ball: a sprawling music and food festival that takes over the city's core this weekend. The inaugural Life is Beautiful event boasts many stock festival components: dozens of indie acts, including big names like Beck and Vampire Weekend, whimsical flourishes like a pop-up park, and an array of art imported from the Burning Man desert carnival. And it has something else: Financial backing and logistical support from Tony Hsieh, the Internet billionaire who founded Zappos,...

Five things we learned about the Us box office this weekend, including why franchises rule and the Spanish-language film that knocked Pan's Labyrinth off its perch
• Dane DeHaan: beat poet, Metallica roadie and, next, James Dean
• Sundance film festival 2013: Don Jon - first look review
Never bet against a number higher than one
You'll be familiar with the popular Hollywood adage, "Nobody knows anything", which begs the question: why would an investor go anywhere near the movie business? Be that as it may, we wish it to be known that this column reserves the right to contradict itself next week (or even next point) by saying the exact opposite of what it is about to state as a cast-iron rule of thumb. While it is true that as the numeral after a franchise title goes up, the movie's quality diminishes, it is still likely that box office returns will rise.

Eugenio Derbez, the director and star of Instructions Not Included, aspires to be a figure like Roberto Benigni: in interviews, he name checks Life is Beautiful, the 1997 film that netted Benigni two Oscars (Best Actor and Best Foreign Language Film) at the 71st Academy Awards. Derbez turned to Life is Beautiful as a starting point for his new film’s story about a father who creates elaborate, fanciful scenarios to address the emotional needs of his young daughter. Moving this setup to contemporary Los Angeles, Instructions Not Included follows well-meaning reformed lothario Valentin, who repeatedly martyrs himself as a stuntman...

Toad the Wet Sprocket wants you to know they’re happy. On “New Constellation,” their first studio album in 16 years (and also their only album named after a song, not counting their best-of compilation “P.S.: A Toad Retrospective,” and I don’t), Glen Phillips, the lead singer/rhythm guitarist/main songwriter sings about happy accidents, love lost but then quickly regained, and just plain love of everything. (The chorus of the title track, which was once featured on the website of “Rolling Stone,” affirms, “Declare my love to all creation!”) Even on the country-tinged “California Wasted,” when he sings, “I still make the same mistakes,” he sounds downright enthusiastic. And unlike their last studio album, “Coil,” which featured a song with the line, “Life is suffering,” there’s actually a song on “New Constellation” titled “Life Is Beautiful,” sung and cowritten by lead guitarist Todd Nichols.
