    • Trivia
Anne Ramsey's speech impediment was caused by operations she underwent in order to treat throat cancer. During filming, Ramsey was undergoing additional oral surgery and endured intense pain. However, according to director Danny DeVito, she never requested to be excused from work. "Momma" went on to become Ramsey's most critically-lauded performance, culminating with Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 1988. Sadly, she died only six months after the ceremony because of that very same throat cancer.
    • Goofs
When Larry reads out the title of a student's "coffee table book" he says "One Hundred Girls I'd Like To Pork" but his lips are clearly mouthing the final word as "Fuck." This line was presumably overdubbed to avoid an R rating.
    • Quotes

[Momma sees Larry for the first time]

      Momma: Who's this?

Owen: This is Cousin Paddy. He's coming to stay with us a while. Isn't that nice?

Momma: [suspiciously] You don't *have* a "Cousin Paddy".

Owen: [to Larry] You lied to me!

[Owen knocks Larry out with a frying pan to the head]

Too Much Of The Same Thing
Plot- Two unhappy guys consider trading murders to rid themselves of their problem people after seeing Hitchcock's thematically similar 'Strangers on a Train" (1951).

Considering the talent involved, the black comedy's disappointing. The main problem's with the repetitive plot that does get tiresome since there's only a minor subplot (Greist) to help carry the 90-minutes of storyline. Thus, comedians Crystal and DeVito's character and shtick are simply repeated over and over-- DeVito, the harassed mother's boy; Crystal, the frustrated writer and would-be murderer. There are, of course, funny moments, but they merely spread out rather than add up.

Still, I've never seen a witchy character as obnoxious as Anne Ramsey; I'm glad she got an award. The screen gets super-charged whenever her boisterous presence appears. Good thing her scenes are framed in humorous fashion. All in all, she steals the movie from the two stars, even bustling bumblebee DeVito. In my little book she's definitely one-of-a-kind.

Overall, it's a movie that doesn't serve its comedy actors well. Fortunately, each would go on to better things.
