    Storyline

    Edit
In 2017, a rich man travels to the ends of the earth to find that the perfect woman is always under his nose. When successful businessman Sam Treadwell finds that his animatronic wife, Cherry 2000 has shorted out, he hires sexy renegade tracker E. Johnson (Melanie Griffith) to find her exact duplicate. Their journey to replace his perfect mate leads them into the treacherous and lawless region of Zone 7, under the tyrannical overlord Lester. During their journey, Treadwell learns the hard way that the perfect woman is made not of computer chips and diodes, but of real flesh and blood. —Ron Borgstedt <ronborgstedt@sbcglobal.net>

    • Trivia
Filmed in 1985 and slated for release in 1986 by Orion Pictures in the United States. Due to reasons unknown, this never materialized and the film was released in Europe instead. The film would make its American debut in late 1988 on Orion Home Video, capitalizing on the buzz surrounding star Melanie Griffith and her upcoming film Working Girl (1988), for which she received an Oscar nomination. Several years later, Griffith said that Cherry 2000 (1987) is her least favorite film but also acknowledged that the film enjoyed some cult status on cable.
    • Goofs
      E. Johnson drives a classic "64 & 1/2" Mustang, until the car is picked up by the magnet when it magically turns into a less classic "66" Mustang. Then it's back to a "64 & 1/2" when it's brought to Lester's "Sky Ranch".

Ginger: You guys want some sandwiches?

      Male Gang Member: Lester's dead.

      [points to Lester's hanging body]

Ginger: Well, no sandwiches for him.

[walks over and sits down by Cherry 2000, opens thermos, hands Cherry 2000 a sandwich]

      Cherry 2000: [opens sandwich] Pretty.

    Surprisingly fantastic...a real treat
Okay, "Cherry 2000" has finally achieved "cult film" status. But unlike many other cult movies, it actually deserves the title.

There are many things to like about this flick. The nuanced, likeable Ben Johnson has a good role that even delivers some tragedy (how often do you get that in a b-movie?). The charismatic Griffith is alternately contemplative and kick-ass. Of course, Tim Thomerson as Lester nearly steals the show, providing a truly strange, ruthless villain.

The effects are cheesy, sure, but they never look fake, unlike a lot of the CGI films coming out today. When you see E. Johnson's Ford being dangled over the Hoover Dam, that is an ACTUAL car, not some stupid digital effect.

The movie does lay its message on thick, but considering the obvious budget constraints they were working with, that's a perfectly excuseable flaw. The satire is at times hilarious (watch for Larry Fishburne's turn as a lawyer with Morpheus-esque reflecting sunglasses, and the final exit of the villain is truly visually ironic). I bought this on DVD (having never seen it on TV) and really liked it...maybe you will, too.
