The title refers to the U.S. Army's former "MOS" (job code) for a combat cameraman. The story follows a unit of American G.I.s in Vietnam, all with different backgrounds and motives for being there, through the lens of his camera.

This series offers an unflinching look at the "tours of duty" of several members of a platoon during the Vietnam War. Death is inevitable in war, and major characters do die. The protagonists face the Viet Cong, social disapproval, and sometimes themselves over the course of the series. Written by

As cheesy as it may appear on film, the part of the first season where they discover the N.V.A. tunnel by a soldier accidentally sitting on a nail was based on a true event from the war. During Operation Crimp (January 8 - 14, 1966, a joint operation between the U.S. and Australian troops that was the largest operation of the war at that time) a U.S. serviceman accidentally discovered a bunker complex by sitting on a nail protruding from something covering a tunnel entrance. In the pilot episode, with a background of 1967, all of the characters wear helmets with helmet covers issued in 1970s. See more »
A wonderfull series that everyone should have seen.
Tour of Duty is one of the best series I have ever seen. It has great performances from the entire cast, a wonderfull human story about an inhuman war and the story-telling is perfectly paced.
Sadly, it didn't get the ratings it deserved back in the states, though it was a big hit over here (and several other countries, I've learned). If you get the chance, watch it (like I'm doing now as it's being re-run on SBS-6). I doubt you'll be disappointed.
