Who Was Almost Cast in 'Top Gun'?

The cast of Top Gun is so iconic, it's hard to imagine anyone else filling those roles, but Maverick and Iceman almost looked very different.

Storyline

Code-named "Maverick", Pete Mitchell, the impetuous daredevil Navy-pilot ace, is accepted into Miramar's elite Fighter School, also known as "Top Gun". There, as the impulsive pilot competes with the best of the best, not only will he meet Charlie, the flying school's curvaceous astrophysics instructor, but also the brilliant and highly competitive fellow student, "Iceman", with whom right from the start, he will engage in a reckless contest. As Maverick is haunted by his father's mysterious death, will he be able to suppress his wild nature to win the prestigious Top Gun Trophy? Written by Nick Riganas

Trivia

Matthew Modine turned down the Tom Cruise role because he objected to the film's Cold War politics. Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, Matthew Broderick, Sean Penn, Michael J. Fox, Scott Baio and Tom Hanks all turned down the role of Maverick. Janet Graham, Charlie Sheen, Jim Carrey, Rob Lowe, Kevin Bacon, Eric Stoltz, and Robert Downey Jr. were considered for the role of Maverick. Sheen (who was deemed too young for the role) would later go on to spoof the role in the comedy Hot Shots! (1991). See more »

Goofs

During the flat spin sequence, Maverick tells Goose to perform the ejection because he is pinned down by the force of the spin and "can't reach the ejection handle". In reality, the Martin Baker GRU-7A ejection seat, along will all modern ejection seats, has an additional ejection handle located between the pilot's legs for exactly this situation, so the pilot can eject no matter how he is positioned in the seat. Crazy Credits

The opening credits sequence features a detailed history of the Top Gun program before the title of the film appears on screen, with the remainder of the opening credits devoted to footage of planes being launched from and landing on an aircraft carrier. See more »

Alternate Versions

The UK widescreen VHS version released in 1996 and UK DVD versions released in 2000, later reissued in 2006 had an aspect ratio of 2.00:1. The theatrical prints and the DVD version released in 2004 (US) and 2005 (UK) have an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Please note the UK widescreen VHS version released in 1996 incorrectly states an aspect ratio of 2.1:1 on the cover. It does in fact match the UK DVD versions released in 2000 and 2006 which had an aspect ratio of 2.00:1. See more »

Classic 80's movie: Tom Cruise at his best
19 January 2002 | by GRL666See all my reviews

The fact that people are still writing about this film 15yrs after it was first released (and I'm not just talking about me!) really says a lot. I was dubious about writing a comment, seeing as it really has been ages since it was released and thinking that most people who wanted to see it probably already have. After recently watching it for the umpteenth time on TV, I felt compelled to write a quickie ;) I have to say, it's the first time I looked up Top Gun on the imdb and I was actually quite surprised that it only received a 6.4 rating. If you haven't seen the movie yet, don't judge it by the ratings, read a few user comments first and just rent it out, I guarantee you'll have a good time, especially with its amazing soundtrack! The best 80's songs ever written, I still get chills down my back listening to them ;) It's a simple plot but there's something about it that makes it a seriously enjoyable film and one you can watch time and time again. Go have fun! Enjoy!
