Enjoyed this film....
rebeljenn13 November 2005
Although I don't remember much of this film to write a really good and helpful review of it, I do remember that I particularly enjoyed this film when I was younger. I probably caught it in my early teens or just before, and I watched it several times with my brothers (who are around my age). We couldn't get enough of this film.

It was not a scary film, but it was particularly comical and downright silly. It had something to do about a house that the family moved into which was haunted by 'Mr. Boogedy'. The first film was about Mr. Boogedy. The second was about him getting a wife, and it is called 'Bride of Boogedy' if you want to key that into the IMDb.

The catchphrase of Mr. Boogedy was 'Boogedy Boogedy Boo!' It was a very silly film, but we really enjoyed it as children. It is just right because it was not particularly frightening, and it is a good film for older children to watch around Halloween.

A good kid's horror movie
drumr15831 October 2002
I remember watching this movie and being scared. But I also remember laughing a lot, as well. The scary parts weren't so scary that I never wanted to see it again, though. Lucky for me (since it isn't offered on video) I had my Mom tape it. This movie was great, and the sequel "Bride of Boogedy" wasn't too bad either. Although, I was a bit disheartened that Kristy Swanson didn't play the role of Jennifer in BOTH movies. A good movie to watch with kids for a "scary" movie night, because it won't give them horrible nightmares. I give it 8 stars!

Mr. Boogedy and Bride of Boogedy
uncletreez6 December 2007
I recently ordered a copy of both movies from a retailer who sells old movies on line. I paid nearly forty dollars for the pair, only to receive TV recordings, which had been burned to DVD. Was i mad? Hell no!For twenty one years i have searched for this movie, and i don't think Disney will re-release it, because it is not very politically correct. The basic plot is that a family of pranksters moves to a town called Lucifer Falls. Their house is haunted by a three-hundred year old ghosts called MR. Boogedy, known in life as William Hanover, before he sold his soul to the devil. While alive, Hanover was in love with a woman called, the widow Marian, but she will have nothing to do with him, because he hates children, and she has a young son. He puts a curse on the property surrounding his house, to prevent Marian entering, and he kidnaps her son,and then he blows the house up with himself and the boy inside(yeah i know...some Disney film; huh?). He keeps the mother and son seporated, even after death. I do not want to get into too much detail, because there is an entire younger generation who may have not gotten to see this one, but I will say that Mr. Boogedy's makeup was scarier than Freddy Crougar's. I saw it first when I was seven, back in 1987, so I thought it would be cool to show it to my nieces and nephews. My seven year old niece was afraid to go to bed when i showed her this DVD. There is no way Disney can release this one with a G-rating.

Great halloween movie for the whole family
Mcduff360110 October 2018
It is creepy and Mr. Boogedy has a gross face. But it is disney so it's pretty tame (unless your little one is sensitive then this might be too scary).

The movie adds tension as it builds to the finale. I have seen this movie before and still found myself getting a little creeped out by it. Great Halloween movie.

Great movie
jo77jo777 June 2003
I loved this movie when I was younger. My mom recorded it and we used to watch it all the time. I've since lost the tape and miss it. It had so many great detials with the right amount of fright factor. Disney really should put it on video or rerelease it on TV. I'll never forget the splitting statue or how the father floated when he was posessed by the cape.

Booger This.
southdavid7 October 2023
Though this appears as an episode of a series here, to me, the first time I'd ever heard of it was on Disney Plus, as a stand-alone film. It was not good but did have one bright spark.

Irritating salesman Carleton David (Richard Masur) moves his family to an old house. Despite a warning from the estate agent Neil Witherspoon (John Astin) that the house is haunted, the family put initial weirdness down to their father's penchant for practical jokes. When the hauntings get worse, Jennifer (Kristy Swanson) heads to town to research and discover that 300 years ago, William Hanover (Howard Witt) was rejected by Marion (Katherine Kelly Lang) and accidentally killed himself, her and her son Jonathan (Jaimie McEnnan).

This 45-minute film, from 1986 is starting to show its age now and many of the visual effects don't stand up particularly well to the scrutiny of a HD television. That perhaps though is a forgivable failing, after thirty years. Less acceptable is how dull and thin the story is, the haunting scenes are confusing and despite that run time of just three quarters of an hour, it's still stretched well beyond breaking point.

I also found the family patriarch; Carleton to be infuriatingly awful. I like Richard Masur from other things. He has a similar role in "California Man" but here he'd definitely drive his wife and family away in minutes, if he was anything like as repetitive with his ceaseless jackassery.

The one bright spark though is John Astin, who milks his role for all it's worth and is great.

I do think that this is the sort of thing that Disney should be rebooting. We're much more into horror comedy combinations now and I think the right writer would be able to strike a much better tone and get more actual story into the film.

good movie
stormygail502 February 2009
i have been trying to get this movie on DVD for years, i love it as do my children , who all want to have a copy to. this movie brought back a lot of good memories for everyone, we sat around the TV with popcorn and soda, with the lights out and throughly enjoyed being scared and also laughing at the movie and each other.

i sure hope this movie is released soon, TV should begin playing these

older movies again.

Richard masur gave an awesome performance as the father and Mimi Kennedy as the mother.

people should make every effort to view this movie!

Short, silly, and kind of scary
cricketbat13 October 2020
Mr. Boogedy has a handful of suspenseful moments, yet the silly tone keeps it from being too scary. The effects are also fairly impressive for a Disney made-for-TV movie. This is a short film made for kids, but it's a good introduction to the horror genre.

Warning: Spoilers
When you move to a town called Lucifer Falls and are warned immediately about Mr. Boogedy, well, chances are that things are going to get pretty scary, particularly if you're a child. It turns out that there's not just one ghost on the loose in this one, but three.

That's because three hundred years ago, William Hanover fell in love with a beautiful widow named Marion who didn't return his affection. He made a deal with the devil to gain a magical cloak and used it to kidnap the widow's son Jonathan, but when he cast his first spell, he destroyed his home, his crush and her child, stranded all three of them in our plane of existence.

Now, Mr. Boogedy - William Hanover - and Jonathan are trapped inside the home of the newly arrived Davis family, along with young Jonathan, while his mother is unable to enter the home and ever see her son again.

Yeah, like I've said more than once, live action Disney gets pretty dark.

There's a pretty good cast in this with Richard Masur (Rhoda) as the dad, Mimi Kennedy as the mom and Benji Gregory (ALF), David Faustino and Kristy Swanson as their children. Plus, it's always great to see John Astin in anything.

Writer Michael Janover's original version of this movie was called Cheap Thrills and was an Airplane!-style parody of horror films. It was meant to star Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, but when Disney picked the project, the humor got toned down. Janover got the name Boogedy from Robert Hayes - speaking of Airplane! - yelling that as he walks the ledge in Cat's Eye.

What a great memory!
Hatokirei31 July 2011
I remember watching this movie when I was younger, and 25 years later I STILL remember it. It's a simple plot with funny acting. A family who deals in selling gags and practical jokes moves into a house haunted by ghosts that are roughly 300 years old. So of course any paranormal activity that happens they think is a joke being played on them. With early performances by: David Faustino (Bud from Married with Children), Kristy Swanson, and stars like John Astin (TV's Addams Family), Richard Masur and Mimi Kennedy,(and later in the second movie Bride of Boogedy), Eugene Levy, Vincent Schiavelli... this was an all star cast either before they reached stardom, or still during, in a made for TV show.

There is a petition for Disney to release both Mr. Boogedy and Bride of Boogedy on DVD, which I REALLY hope Disney will do. This is just a fun movie to watch and a great throwback to the 80's music.

Another good movie
Kim-9523 June 1999
Like "The Peanut Butter Solution," this is also another one of my favorite movies when I was about 5. William Hanover, or as most people know him, Mr. Boogedy, would always scare me some when I would look at his nasty (in the words of Jennifer) hamburger face. But I would always come back for more and I loved this movie more that going outside to play with my best friend. I would recommend this movie to anyone because it is somewhat scary to younger kids but at the same time, there is humor in it.

Does anybody remember the dancing mummy?
Spellcaster_NZ28 October 2005
I saw this movie well over 10 years ago and LOVED it. I was quite young at the time.My favourite bit was when Dad says "this house is not haunted!" As soon as he says this, the organ starts to play by itself and this "dummy mummy" does the most ridiculous dance. When I saw it for the first time, I was laughing uncontrollably.

I cannot really say that I found the movie scary, except perhaps towards the end, but I did really enjoy it. Have made some attempts to try and find a copy of this movie, but no luck so far :( Perhaps it's a good thing given that it may lose its magic that I have in my memories if I was to see it again as an adult ;)

Cute Movie! I Want To See It on DVD!
SpikeBuff10 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I remember watching Mr. Boogedy on the Disney channel and thinking it was great! I even taped it on VHS video tape but no longer have the tape so I would like to see it get put on DVD or video but especially DVD! Kristy Swanson from the 1992 theatrical movie Buffy The Vampire Slayer was great as Jenny the teenaged daughter of the family who bought the old house haunted by the ghost of the evil and freaky Mr. Boogedy and I also liked Mimi Kennedy as her mother. Fans of the TV show Dharma and Greg may recall her as playing Dharma's new agey hippie mother. I also liked the actor who played the father who fans of the old sitcom Rhoda may recall him as playing one of Rhoda's sister Brenda's boyfriends. And the little brothers were good too, David Faustion who played Bud Bundy in Married with Children was great as Corin and Benji Gregory who I think went on to star in the sitcom Alf was adorable as little Arie. And last but not least, John Astin was great as the weird neighbor and head of the chamber of commerce and welcoming committee. I hope to see this cute movie put on DVD!

Great Scary and Enjoyable Movie
fast_train825 November 2000
I watched Mr. Boogedy and Bride of Boogedy both were great movies especially for kids. It scared me and made myself laugh at the same time. Kristy Swanson was the perfect person for the role of Jennifer. It's a very orginal ghost movie, even though you don't see it much on T.V. maybe on the Family Channel.

"Well...if it were me...I'd move."
aidanratesmovies11 October 2020
This movie is freaking ridiculous, and I kinda love it. There is nothing about this film that really works, the acting is bad, the writing is horrible, and it proves to just about be the most generic ghost story you have ever heard. However, despite all these flaws, this film is hilariously bad, and very entertaining to watch. Some of the lines in this film are so bad they are funny, and the acting is so over the top at times, I honestly don't know what they were thinking. It's stupid, juvenile, corny, and quite fun to watch. Watch it for a good laugh this halloween season.

My Rating: 10/10- ironically of course

A Movie Kids Will Love!
Ktyddb1236129 September 2005
I saw this movie when it aired on Walt Disney World in 1986. I loved it and so did my daughters, who were small at the time!!!!! This movie is about a joke store owner moving his family to a town, which of course his children do not like, and end up buying a haunted house. Weird things start to happen, which at first they thought were just jokes being played on them. It is a great movie for kids at Halloween (or anytime) as it is a little spooky, a little corny and really funny. It is just a little scarier for kids, than "When Good Ghouls Go Bad" if you have ever seen that, but just as child friendly. My daughters still talk about the movie and are hoping I can find it. This is a must see!!

Great family movie, a blast from the past for those who remember!
Anarchistnation7 November 2009
Mr. Boogedy is one of the movies I remember most from my childhood because it made an impact in some way. I remembered bits and pieces of the movie from when I was about 5 years old, and 5 years later my grandfather recorded both Mr. Boogedy and Bride of Boogedy, I still have the tape to this day tucked away safely. About a year ago I started searching aggressively for any glimmer of hope that Disney or SOMEONE would release the movies commercially on DVD or AT LEAST air it on t.v. again! No such luck even to this day, even though there are petitions to bring these classic family movies to DVD for the general public to enjoy and even some sites online where you can buy someone's VHS copy copied to DVD! I found one site that seemed legitimate enough to do business with, onlyclassicmoviesdotcom, and I bought the DVD copy of Mr. Boogedy. Of course it was someone's VHS copy transfered to DVD, but maybe 2 weeks after ordering from the site I got my DVD copy and watched it. The quality isn't all that great, but at least I won't have to wear out my VHS copy anymore. Hopefully, other people won't have to either or maybe they'll have their own copy to share with their children.

I LOVED this movie when it came out. It scared me though.
KLC_C30 October 2001
This was a great movie. I wish that Disney would offer it on video at the Disney stores. This is the best "horror" movie. It has just enough scary stuff for kids mixed with humor. I recommend this to everyone. It was really funny when everyone says, "just kidding".

This is a great movie and so is Bride of Boogedy would love to have them on DVD if anyone knows where I can get them thank you and they should put it on TV again. This is a great movie for a family to share at Halloween time.I watched with my kids when it first came out and we still talk about it. My son was only 2 when this came out and my daughters where 4 6 and 10 we all watched and just loved it I wish Disney would put it on again I know others would enjoy it. This and the Halloween Town movies are something for the family to watch scary but not too scary. They should have more movies like this for the family to share together.
