America Isn’t Ready for Asian Rappers. They’re Taking Over Anyway

Nobody in the crowd at 88rising’s early October show in New York City, an unapologetic riot on the brand-new open-air rooftop at Pier 17, is confused about where they are and what they’re doing there — except the security staff, who wander around most of the night in abject confusion. A few of them watch the whole concert from the edges, looking lost; one, when I ask for directions to the elevator, asks me in return to fill him in about what’s going on.

The audience suffers no such bewilderment.

Associated Press Withdraws Premature Death Report on Director Costa-Gavras

  • The Wrap
The Associated Press on Thursday withdrew a report that Oscar-winning writer-director Costa-Gavras had died at age 85, saying that its story was based on a tweet from “a fake account” it incorrectly attributed to Greece’s culture minister.

“Gavras is alive and spoke on Greek state television Thursday,” the wire service said in its follow-up report.

The Associated Press said it had based its its now-retracted report on what it described as a statement from Greek culture minister Mysini Zorba.

The AP has deleted a tweet about Greek-French film director Costa Gavras. The Greek Culture Ministry says the Tweet on which his 'death' was based came from a fake account.

Without Words, Randy Travis Makes Fans’ Dreams Come True

This meet-and-greet would be like none of the dozens of others this week at Nashville’s Cma Music Festival. No autographs from this artist, and no more than a tentative “hello” or “thanks.” A handshake? Yes, but only from the left hand, not the right.

None of that mattered to the overflow crowd that lined up Friday afternoon at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The thrill was simply getting to be in the presence of Randy Travis.

A near-fatal stroke in July 2013 has robbed the 58-year-old country legend of many things – including his singular voice. But it

Criterion Reflections – Mr. Freedom – Es 9

David’s Quick Take for the tl;dr Media Consumer:

Mr. Freedom begins with a wail of sirens as Chicago cops swarm in to crack the skulls of rioters and looters. It ends with a catastrophic explosion that levels a city block in Paris and mutilates the body of the movie’s titular hero. In between all that, against a backdrop of Cold War intrigue and superpower paranoia run amok, we see scenes involving overt racist mockery, rape as a spectator sport, sacrilege, poisoning, prostitution, assassination, the sexist degradation of women and a pervasive attitude of unmitigated cynicism and ridicule toward the aspirations of the USA as a bulwark of liberty, democracy and decency against the forces of tyranny and oppression around the world. All the necessary ingredients for a robust satirical take-down of good old fashioned patriotism, American-style! The politics are radical, the humor is often guttural, and the

Preacher: what can we expect from the TV adaptation?

Coming to AMC this Sunday and to Amazon Prime Video this Monday, we anticipate Preacher's conversion from comic to TV show...

To borrow a phrase from Zoolander, Garth Ennis is so hot right now. Much like Mark Millar a couple of years ago, creative types and studio bods seem to be champing at the bit to develop the Northern Irish writer’s work: the recent Netflix take on Marvel’s Punisher character was clearly drawn from his seminal Max run and proved so popular that a solo series now seems to be in the works. Ennis’ sex’n’violence subversive superhero deconstruction, The Boys is also on the way to TV but most notably, Preacher, the iconic title that made Ennis’ name and helped to shape the landscape of 90s comic books premieres this very Sunday on AMC. (It was also announced on Wednesday that it

'Empire': The Tao of Cookie

'Empire': The Tao of Cookie
Empire, the breakout Fox hit that returns on September 23, has a lot of things going for it: soapy storylines, progressive politics, Grammy-winning guest stars, bonkers plot twists and a singular, fun-as-hell hip-hop backdrop. But make no mistake: The show's crown jewel is Taraji P. Henson's Cookie Lyon, the ex-con Empire Entertainment matriarch who's back to gain control of her children, her company, and her man. More than a scene-stealer, Henson commits assault and battery whenever she's on screen, dressed to impress (or kill) and throwing shade one killer quote at a time.

Empire Recap: One Coarse Meal

Empire Recap: One Coarse Meal
“Better be glad I don’t feel like no scene today — ’cause I’ll shut it down,” huffs Cookie Lyon, right after her ex-husband Lucious denies her access to a video shoot being run by his current flame Anika (code name: Bougie Ho) during this week’s Empire.

And for the first half of the episode, the quotable, cantankerous heart of Fox’s addictive hip-hop drama is on such good behavior, I worry that some misguided Fox executive might already be sending notes to the Empire writers’ room asking for a kinder, gentler, “more likable” protagonist.

Fret not, though. Just

The Mindy Project’s Ike Barinholtz on the Anal Episode and Adam Pally on Skeleton Sex
It was the booty call heard 'round the world. On the October 7 episode of The Mindy Project ("I Slipped"), Danny tried to get some action from his girlfriend Mindy’s back section, marking network comedy’s first attempt to talk about anal sex. “Well, I have to correct you there as I believe there was one pioneer before us who bravely tackled anal sex on broadcast TV, and that was an episode of Amen starring Sherman Hemsley,” Ike Barinholtz joked when Vulture sat down with the actor/writer/producer on the show’s L.A. set last Friday. “Actually, I don’t think it has ever been done before, probably with good reason. We’re proud to make history any way we can. In fact, we sent that episode straight to the Smithsonian. It will be running on a perpetual loop for eternity next to Archie Bunker’s chair.”“I

New Documentary In The Works On Actor & Gospel Composer Jester Hairston

I think it’s fair to say that when most people think of Jester Hairston today they usually think of his role as Rolly Forbes, the funny, sharp tongued old man on the NBC sitcom Amen with Sherman Hensley, back during the late 80’s to early 90’s.But Hairston, who passed away in 2000 at the remarkable age of 99, led a much more interesting and complex life. Not only was he an actor, starting his film career back in 1936 with hundreds of movies and TV performances, including Amos and Andy, In the Heat of the Night and dozens of musical shorts made during the 40’s and 50’s, Hairston was perhaps more well known as a composer (with some over 300 gospel songs to his credit), conductor,...

Sherman Hemsley Remembered By Loved Ones At Funeral

Sherman Hemsley Remembered By Loved Ones At Funeral
El Paso, Texas — Friends and family remembered actor Sherman Hemsley at his funeral Wednesday in Texas by showing video clips of him as George Jefferson, the TV role that was his best known.

About 150 people attended the service at Cielo Vista Church in El Paso. Hemsley, 74, died of lung cancer on July 24, but a fight over his estate delayed his burial.

Mourners couldn't help but laugh as they watched the clips of Hemsley playing the feisty, bigoted owner of a chain of dry-cleaning businesses on "The Jeffersons."

"He helped us to laugh, gave us an opportunity to forget the troubles, the stresses of life," El Paso Police Department chaplain Sam Faraone said during Hemsley's eulogy.

Hemsley, an Air Force veteran, was buried at the Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

"The best way I can describe it is by how we released a dove" at the burial, longtime friend Flora Enchinton Bernal

Sherman Hemsley dispute continues to delay burial for actor

  • Pop2it
Actor Sherman Hemsley of "The Jeffersons" and "Amen" died at his Texas home three months ago. But he has still not been laid to rest. According to Fox News, it is because both the beneficiaries of his will and his cause of death have been called into question.

An employee from the San Jose Funeral Home in El Paso tells Fox that Hemsley's body is still at their facility and that they await a court order telling them what to do with it.

The legal dispute at the heart of the problem is between Hemsley's former manager and live-in companion Flora Enchinton, who was named the sole beneficiary in his will, and Richard Thornton, a man from Philadelphia who claims to be Hemsley's brother. Thornton has filed a civil lawsuit disputing the validity of the will. The value of the estate is estimated at $50,000.

Now a third party has come
