Storyline

In an effort to understand the plight of homeless women living on the streets, young social worker, Carrie Lange (Daphne Zuniga) attempts befriending a homeless woman named Florabelle ('Lucille Ball'). Florabelle believes Carrie is runaway and tells her to go to the homeless shelter for help. Carrie stops another woman from stealing Florabelle's cart and gains her dubious trust. So begins Carrie's education in survival on the streets of Manhattan. Florabelle begins to teach Carrie street survival skills such as when threatened act crazy-the crazier the better, drinking vinegar to toughen the feet and innards, which garbage cans are good to go through for food, and where to find places to sleep and for warmth. This movie makes an effort to investigate the plight of the homeless and what avenues can be taken to help them to help themselves. Written by tonileigh58@yahoo.com

Trivia

When Florabelle is mistakenly herded onto a bus to the Brooklyn shelter, an overweight woman accidentally sits on her. A similar thing happened in "The Tour" (S4;E30) in 1955, when Lucy Ricardo was switching seats on a bus tour of the movie stars' homes. See more »

Goofs

A grocery bag from "Publix" is clearly visible in Florabelle's cart. There is not now, nor has there ever been a Publix store in or around New York. See more »

Quotes

Mr. Berman: [about his drug store] The landlord raised the rent and I lost my lease.
Florabelle: Where will you go?
Mr. Berman: Where everybody goes to die - Florida.
Florabelle: It's nice and warm there, anyways.
Mr. Berman: Feh! I hate it. Nobody's under a hundred. I call it 'the last resort'.

DVD Out
16 November 2006 | by jsosa-1See all my reviews

This movie has been out on DVD for about a year now. You can find it most definitely at many online DVD sites. Don't expect to find it at a DVD store--if you do you'll probably pay more than you should.

Much like many have always said already, this movie is a strong vehicle for Lucy's dramatic acting. Some critics at the time ignored the film saying that they couldn't see lovable wacky Lucy as a bag lady. Their loss. The movie is touching and heartbreaking.

It's a typical made-for-TV movie which has not aged well. The acting (literally everyone except Lucy) is hard to swallow. Casting was weak. This is Lucy's show and she delivers.
