Storyline

Set in Brooklyn, 1963, Jeffrey Willis has just finished high school and isn't quite sure what the future holds. His parents expect him to go to college but he is starting to find his close-knit family stifling. He gets a summer job at the Flamingo beach club where he meets Phil Brody, a successful car dealer who fills Jeffrey's head with ideas about how to make his fortune. Phil is everything Jeffrey would like to be - popular, rich and the best gin rummy player the club has ever seen. Jeffrey's coming of age includes a romance with the very pretty Carla Samson, but the shine on Phil Brody's philosophy of life wears off when he uncovers a significant flaw in his character. Trivia

After a character leaves, we see a shot of a jet airplane. Originally, the airplane shot was not in the movie. After a Midwestern preview, an audience member asked director Garry Marshall what happened to the character that left. When he heard the question, he had the shot inserted. See more »

Goofs

The song, "Stand by Me", is credited to Ben E. King (as King), Elmo Glick (as Glick), Jerry Leiber (as Lieber), and Mike Stoller (as Stoller). 'Elmo Glick' was a pseudonym used by Leiber and Stoller, so there is a redundancy in the credit. See more »

Dillon: Young and still very good
23 March 2001 | by wmcduffeSee all my reviews

I thought this movie was very good. The cast is excellent. I loved Dillon, Elizondo and Crenna. They had great chemistry together. Janet Jones was nice too look at, but as far as acting goes, she didn't do it for me. The story was very good and kept me interested.

On a whole I rate the movie a 8.
