In spite of a rather silly premise and low production values, this is an intense and interesting drama. It is honest and finely acted at least by Bottoms, and the film is able to also address some serious issues about deafness. However, good intentions tire after the first hour of the film, and it is a bit on the maudlin side. But the film's honesty with the subject matter and an earnest performance by Bottoms the lead are enough to make up for this, plus the allusions to Kubrick's work in the film are delightful. Certainly there is the inclination to call this imperfect but still rather well made film a hidden gem.
I saw this movie on Pay-per-View in 1984 and never forgot it. It really stuck with me. Perhaps it was that Tin Man presented itself exactly as it was. It didn't pull on my heartstrings needlessly, and it did make me feel for the main character without a big name or big budget. Timothy Bottoms was at his best in this movie, not over or underplaying the role of the deaf man.
I would recommend it for a Saturday afternoon.
