Storyline

Paul Snider is a narcissistic, small time hustler who fancies himself a ladies man. His life changes when he meets Dorothy Stratten working behind the counter of a Dairy Queen. Dorothy is a pretty but naive high school senior. Paul immediately falls for Dorothy, who sees in Paul a wise, worldly person unlike herself. Paul believes Dorothy is Playboy material, the magazine he sees as only a springboard to bigger and better things. Paul's dream does become a reality: not only does Dorothy eventually marry him, she becomes the August 1979 Playboy Playmate and ultimately Playboy Playmate of 1979, which does indeed lead to the start of an acting career. As Dorothy's star rises, Paul's life is one of a hanger-on as those in Dorothy's new circle, including Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner and movie director Aram Nicholas, don't much like Paul. Paul is unable to eke out a life of his own without using Dorothy's name, which she increasingly is reluctant to provide to her husband. Those that know ... Written by Huggo

Trivia

Prior to this cinema movie being made and released, a telemovie Death of a Centerfold: The Dorothy Stratten Story (1981), had already covered the same story and subject matter, effectively making Star 80 (1983) a form of remake. In that telefilm, first broadcast around a couple of years earlier, Mitchell Ryan played Hugh Hefner, Bruce Weitz portrayed Paul Snider, and Jamie Lee Curtis starred as Dorothy Stratten. This television movie shared a similar title to the Pulitzer Prize-winning Feature Writing Award article "Death of a Playmate" by Teresa Carpenter which had been first published in 'The Village Voice' newspaper in the same 1981 year. The movie isn't perfect, but I'm surprised at its relatively lukewarm ratings. I can't add too much to what the others here have said about Eric Roberts' performance (it was spectacular), but I'll add that this film stayed with me for a long time. I'd seen it on HBO back in 1984. Recently, I stumbled across it again. After watching it, it took days for the spell that the movie had on me to wane.
