Sambo's was an actual restaurant chain which lived out its life in the early to mid-1980s. Midway through the chain's history, its inexcusably objectionable name was abbreviated, and Sambo's became Sam's.

The entire movie was improvised; all the customers who interact with Kaufman and Blassie are plants. The "vomit" the fan spews onto the table is actually ice cream and the fan is actually Andy Kaufman's writing partner Bob Zmuda. Andy Kaufman met his future girlfriend Lynne Margulies on the set of this movie. They meet for the first time on camera.
