Storyline

Michael Dorsey is an unemployed actor with an impossible reputation. In order to find work and fund his friend's play he dresses as a woman, Dorothy Michaels, and lands the part in a daytime drama. Dorsey loses himself in this woman role and essentially becomes Dorothy Michaels, captivating women all around the city and inspiring them to break free from the control of men and become more like Dorsey's initial identity. This newfound role, however, lands Dorsey in a hot spot between a female friend/'lover,' a female co-star he falls in love with, that co-star's father who falls in love with him, and a male co-star who yearns for his affection. Goofs

Soaps tape well in advance of their air date. As the big reveal scene had to be done live, then how did the network and/or producers deal with all the shows where Dorothy is anyone other than Dorothy? Never brought up nor addressed - major plot hole, but like pulling the thread on a sweater, the ending would unravel. See more »

Quotes

Jeff: [Michael's half dressed as Dorothy, getting ready for a dinner with Julie] What do you mean you don't have anything to wear?
Michael Dorsey: She has seen me in all of these!
Jeff: She hasn't seen you in that white dress.
Michael Dorsey: What, this?
[holds up a formal white dress]
Jeff: Yeah.
Michael Dorsey: You cannot wear white to a casual dinner. It's too dressy.
Jeff: Can't you wear pants?
Michael Dorsey: Pants?
[pats the fake butt he's wearing then wags his finger No]

Alternate Versions

"Tootsie" was cut in the UK to remove one line of dialogue with the F word to receive a 'PG'. At that time there was no '12'certificate so uncut it would have got a '15'. For video it was classified '15' uncut. Since then the video has not be re-submitted for re-classification as a '12' so still carries a 30 year old '15' certificate with its 2016 Criterion release. BRILLIANT!
24 March 2003 | by cougar78See all my reviews

This is a wonderful film,I can't remember how many times I have seen it,I love it! Dustin Hoffman is brilliant as Michael Dorsey and Dorothy Michaels.Along with Jessica Lange and Teri Garr and fantastic direction from and co-star Sydney Pollack, this couldn't be any better. It's a great story and well scripted and very funny besides. If you love films you can't not love this one. This is my 2nd favourite film in the world only because ''Some Like it Hot'' is my first choice.Dustin is one of the best actors in the business and continues to be to this day.
