Storyline

Orphaned Heidi is sent by her strict aunt to live with her reclusive grandfather in the Swiss Alps countryside. She likes it there and soon brings joy to her grandpa as well as everyone else there, including the animals. She also meets a nice sheepherder boy and befriends him. However, her aunt returns and takes her to the city to live as a servant girl to a cold rich strict family and their nice but sad handicapped daughter Klara. Heidi befriends Klara and finds fun ways to help her feel better, but Klara's strict parents punish Heidi for her actions which they see as childish and irresponsible. She is locked in a basement, where an evil rat lives. At that point, her friends from the countryside, as well as Klara, decide to rescue Heidi and help her go back to her grandpa.

Trivia

The film was originally set for release in late 1976, before it was pushed back to late 1977 as it was still in the preparatory stages at the time. It was later due for release in 1981 and eventually, the film was released on November 16, 1982. It was also to be distributed in North America by Taft International Pictures, a film division of Hanna-Barbera's then-owner Taft Broadcasting; however, the distribution rights rights were later picked up by Paramount Pictures (who were the distributors of H-B's earlier film adaptation Charlotte's Web (1973)), with H-B retaining outright ownership. Crazy Credits

The end credits begin with landscapes from the film as backdrops, and then for the last half, footage from the song "That's What Friends Are For" plays along with a reprise of the song itself, finally fading to last credit screen with a picture of Heidi and her grandfather in the corner. User Reviews

Under-rated masterpiece.
24 November 2000 | by SanDiegoSee all my reviews

Much under-rated animated feature film from the people behind the classic film "Charlotte's Web" (and most notably Fred Flintstone, Yogi Bear, Scooby-Doo, and Tom and Jerry). Unlike the limited animation they developed for television, H-B Studios' "Heidi's Song" features rich, gorgeous, and colorful scenery, a beloved classic story, and wonderful songs. This one will never go out of style.
