Which is Better? #7 – The Lost Boys vs. Fright Night
It’s been a while since I penned a Which is Better article on here, so, as seen as Summer is making me wish Autumn was here, and I’m counting down the days for the Halloween season, I figured I’d go back to two of my favourite vampire movies ever, and pit them against each other in this almost-pointless-because-it’s-subjective-anyway battle of evil versus evil, vamp versus vamp. Fright Night versus The Lost Boys.

*Cue People are Strange by The Doors*

Ok, so I grew up with The Lost Boys on my television set and the record of the soundtrack echoing from the stereo system. I have always had a lot of fondness for the 80s glam-vamp teen-comedy that featured some of the big names from the era, with Keifer Sutherland in the role of head-but-not-quite-head vampire, David, Jason Patrick and Corey Haim as brothers Micheal and Sam,

Class of 1984: How a Tale of at Risk Youth Became the Edgiest Teen Film of the 80s [Rewind]

Class of 1984: How a Tale of at Risk Youth Became the Edgiest Teen Film of the 80s [Rewind]
Director Mark L. Lester is known for many things. Roller Boogie, Pterodactyl and Showdown in Little Tokyo are one side of this iconoclastic coin. The other side includes movies like Firestarter, Armed and Dangerous and the legendary Commando. Yes, for all that Mr. Lester has given the world of cinema, he helmed this Arnold Schwarzenegger kill-fest, which saw that iconic actor head to Latin America on a death mission after some bad guys kidnap his daughter. The action is tight, on point, and this film works in just about any era because it is so visceral. In fact, Lester acquits himself so well here that one wonders why he didn't make Predator or Total Recall?

However, somewhere amidst the big budget Hollywood films and the cult classics, Mark L. Lester managed to helm a film called Class of 1984. This gem from 1982 is neither big budget nor as fun as

Blu-ray Review – Class of 1984 (1982)

Class of 1984, 1982.

Directed by Mark L. Lester.

Starring Perry King, Merrie Lynn Ross, Timothy Van Patten, Roddy McDowall, Lisa Langlois, Erin Noble, Michael J. Fox, and Stefan Arngrim.

Synopsis:

A new teacher at a violent inner city school goes up against a gang of vicious punks.

In a month that also sees director Mark L. Lester’s goofy sci-fi actioner Class of 1999 get a Blu-ray release, 101 Films are putting out its predecessor in a rather swanky duel-format package as part of their Black Label imprint for its UK Blu-ray debut. Class of 1984 doesn’t have robot teachers or mad albino scientists like its sequel but it is punctuated with the same social commentary, albeit presented in a grittier, less campy way, and enough of an exploitation aesthetic to draw comparisons with Death Wish and incur the wrath of the MPAA and the BBFC, the latter refusing to issue the film

It’s almost time, dear readers! Halloween is nearly upon us, and we have one last batch of killer Blu-ray and DVD releases to get us ready for All Hallows’ Eve this week. Cult film fans will definitely want to pick up a copy of the Special Edition of Torso from Arrow Video, and Vinegar Syndrome is doing the Dark Lord’s work with a quartet of releases they have on tap as well, including The Incubus,

SXSW 2018 Women Directors: Meet Jenn Wexler — “The Ranger”

The Ranger

Jenn Wexler is a writer-director and a producer for NYC’s Glass Eye Pix. Her producing credits include “Darling,” “Like Me,” and “Most Beautiful Island.” “The Ranger” is her directorial debut.

The Ranger” will premiere at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival on March 12.

W&H: Describe the film for us in your own words.

Jw: Punk kids from the city clash with an overzealous park ranger in a candy-colored, retro-style horror/thriller.

W&H: What drew you to this story?

Jw: I’m a huge fan of ’80s punk movies like “The Return of the Living Dead,” and “Class of 1984,” and the teen slashers of the late ’90s are largely responsible for my personality, so I wanted to create a comic-book-style slasher film that encapsulated these influences.

W&H: What do you want people to think about when they are leaving the theater?

Jw: On one level, “The Ranger

It Came From The Tube: A Taste Of Evil (1971)

Have you ever had the feeling you’ve seen something before, but couldn’t quite place when or where? A sense of…deja-view? (Hold your applause and/or groans. It was a premium cable channel way before this stupid pun.) I’m sure it’s happened to all of us at some point, and because I’m an old it took me halfway through watching A Taste of Evil (1971), an ABC Movie of the Week, to realize I had seen the almost exact same plot rolled out in a movie earlier in the same week. Horror is incestuous, and it had to happen eventually, especially when the same writer pens both.

Originally airing on Tuesday, October 12th, A Taste of Evil won out over CBS’ Hawaii Five-o/Cannon block and poor NBC’s Sarge/The Funny Side (from the peacock graveyard – if you know what they are, let me know

Remembering Legend of Billie Jean: The First Great Female Superhero Movie

Remembering Legend of Billie Jean: The First Great Female Superhero Movie
Sure. Billie Jean is not a superhero in the spandex, cape, superpowers sense. And she is not based on a pre-existing comic book character. But she is a strong female warrior, who is truly a hero in her own right. And the movie The Legend of Billie Jean serves as the perfect template for what has come since in the realm of female superhero movies, none-of-them, dare we even say Wonder Woman, quite able to live up to the excitement and adventure on display here in all its raw, 80s form. Even so, it often gets overlooked whenever the subject of female led movies comes up, specifically those of the superhero kind. It barely ever registers a blip. Though it had a familiar superhero in the lead by way of Helen Slater, who played Supergirl just one year before.

It's almost like the writers of The Legend of Billie Jean,

Review: “Bobbie Jo And The Outlaw” (1976) Starring Marjoe Gortner, Lynda Carter And Jesse Vint; Kino Lorber Blu-ray

By Ernie Magnotta

There’s nothing I like better than getting hold of a movie that I’ve been searching over three decades for and adding it to my collection. At my age, there aren’t many vintage films left that I don’t own in one format or another, so when I heard that the 1976 cult classic Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw was getting a Blu-ray release, I was quite enthused. This movie has somehow always managed to elude me. It never seemed to play on any of my cable stations in the early 80s, we never had a copy of it at the video store I worked at in the mid-80s and I was still never able to find a copy of it anywhere throughout the 90s. To be honest, by the time the 21st century hit, I completely forgotten about this movie, so I was pretty

Blu-ray Review: Firestarter Collector’s Edition

With the glut of Stephen King novels adapted into movies during the early-to-mid 1980s, it became all too easy for certain films to fall through the cracks. It was even easier, in fact, when so many of those movies were high-profile productions made by A-list directors like Stanley Kubrick, David Cronenberg, and John Carpenter. One can understand how a movie like Mark L. Lester’s Firestarter, an adaptation of King’s 1980 novel of the same name, wound up getting overlooked. I’m guilty of it myself, having seen the movie and promptly filed it with the other middle-of-the-pack Stephen King movies. Luckily, Scream Factory has a new Blu-ray that has me reconsidering my opinion and hopefully will allow other horror fans to rediscover a really cool film.

Drew Barrymore plays Charlene “Charlie” McGee, the young daughter of college professor Andy McGee (David Keith). When he was a student, Andy and
