In the early twenty-first century, the Tyrell Corporation, during what was called the Nexus phase, developed robots, called "replicants", that were supposed to aid society, the replicants which looked and acted like humans. When the superhuman generation Nexus 6 replicants, used for dangerous off-Earth endeavors, began a mutiny on an off-Earth colony, replicants became illegal on Earth. Police units, called "blade runners", have the job of destroying - or in their parlance "retiring" - any replicant that makes its way back to or created on Earth, with anyone convicted of aiding or assisting a replicant being sentenced to death. Only a few days away from the beginning of principal photography, production company Filmways, Inc., who had promised to provide $15 million for the production, withdrew from the project, investing the money in Blow Out (1981) instead. In only a matter of a few days, producer Michael Deeley was able to broker a $22 million three-way deal with Tandem Pictures, the Ladd Company (through Warner Brothers) and Hong Kong producer Sir Run Run Shaw (Twentieth Century Fox, United Artists, and Universal Pictures all turned the project down). The Ladd Company provided $7.5 million and took domestic distribution rights. Sir Run Run Shaw also provided $7.5 million and took international distribution rights. Tandem Pictures provided $7 million and took ancillary distribution rights (television, home video, et cetera). Tandem also provided the completion guarantee on the proviso that if this movie went over its $22 million budget by 10% or more, they would pay for it, but they could assume complete artistic control of the project. Neither Holden nor Deckard utilize the videos they already had of the replicants for identification. If they already knew what they looked like then why did Holden need to test Leon, or Deckard need to make a new photo of Zhora? It's not like the replicants went to any great lengths to change their appearances. See more »

CBS edited 3 minutes from this film for its 1986 network television premiere. Some of the missing scenes include:
Bryant's line "Don't be an asshole Deckard" was changed to "Don't be an ass Deckard".
The word "Christ" was cut from Byrant's line "Christ Deckard, you look almost as bad as that skin job you left on the sidewalk"
The word "goddamn" was cut from Bryant's line "He's a goddamn one man slaughter house."
All scenes showing Zhora's breasts have been removed.
Roy's line, "I want more life fucker/father" was changed to "I want more life".
Roy's murder of Tyrell is much shorter than in all other versions.
The fight between Pris and Deckard is heavily edited; all shots of Pris thrashing on the ground after being shot were cut, as were all the scenes where Deckard's head is trapped between her legs.
This is simply Scott's finest hour. There are a sheer plethora of futuristic films with vision. Films which crudely grope into a possible time ahead,when perhaps a post apocalyptic era is scattered with cliché upon cliché and often miss the whole point. What Ridley Scott achieved with this film,is an entirely possible scenario. It really does feel like a science fiction novel brought to life,but not so much as its derivative penned by Phillip K Dick(do androids dream of electric sheep?). Its a grimy,violent world inhabited by the sick,lower class,villainous second citizens who haven't quite made the grade for the off world colonies. We have a true smelting pot of nationalities.The heavy eastern references within china town like inner cities is particularly poignant.
This film also sees Ford in perfect casting.Theirs a rye charm that Ford has that no other actor could fake or fill quite as effortlessly. Its a mixed review depending on what version you have seen. For me,the directors cut is simply too cut. I preferred the audience friendly screening which had the wonderful narration. The finest moment with this narration has to be the moments described by Batty in his dying eyes and the summing up by Ford of this man/machines passion and love for life.. No other sci-fi futuristic film has ever made the grade before or since in my humble opinion. It captured the raw smells and light of a brutal future scarily depicted in films or even so well. From the chase scene with Zora to the flybys over the city capturing a stunning skyline,chimneys and skyscrapers in one shot. This is my favourite movie of all time for all the reasons above and many more i could effortlessly type all day and night.
