Trivia

While several large sets were built for the film, their number had to be limited due to budget constrains. John Milius did not want to rely on optical effects and matte paintings (painted landscapes) to film the remaining scenes. The crew instead adopted miniature effect techniques (playing on perspective) to achieve the illusion of size and grandeur for several scenes. Scale models of structures were constructed by special effects and visual effects artist Emilio Ruiz del Río and positioned in front of the cameras so that they appeared as full-sized structures on film. Goofs

At various points in the movie the sound of the common loon (a type of duck) is heard. It has a haunting, mystical sound. The movie takes place in arid, desert conditions, however the common loon is a waterfowl that only inhabits lakes and other bodies of water. Loons would not be heard in the kinds of settings depicted in the film. See more »

Alternate Versions

More spoken dialogue is added for Conan in the German DVD version. In the beginning, when his life is told after being released from the wheel, he is offered a woman to sleep with him. In the original he doesn't say a word, but in the German version you hear him saying "Don't be afraid. I won't hurt you." Obviously, this was only possible, because Arnold Schwarzenegger had his face turned away from the camera. See more »

My favorite movie as a child and still the best fantasy!
25 June 2001 | by MunggSee all my reviews

This is really an amazing movie! It is so passionate and intense. It all feels so genuine as well.

During my childhood this was my all-time favorite! From an adult (25) perspective, his movie is as damn amazing as I remember. Thee story and dialog are really damn good. There are so many classic scenes. I got my girlfriend to watch it. She was convinced it was going to be a stupid Arnold muscle movie (it seems almost everyone thinks this) but she loved it.

It's such a change to see such an un-ironic passionate movie. I can't see a movie like this being made today. The nudity and violence were great and added realism without ever being flatly gratuitous.

Don't see Destroyer though, that was absolutely awful.
