Storyline

Russia, 1916. Be it by craft or madness, Rasputin exercises power over the indecisive Nicholas, and the religious Czarina worships the Siberian as God. He manipulates the Czar in his relations with the Duma and influences the choice of a new premier. Rasputin assaults a baroness; her husband is jailed for defending her, and she must offer sexual favors to Rasputin to save her husband. The Czar finally orders Rasputin from St. Petersburg, but somehow he enters the palace and, in a disheveled trance, convinces the Czar to make a disastrous change in war strategy. A cadre of nobles take matters into their own hands and arrange a last dinner party for the interloping monk. Written by <jhailey@hotmail.com>

Goofs

A thick layer of muddy water is shown to cover the bottom of Rasputin's grave. A loud splash is heard when the coffin is dropped into it. In reality, Rasputin was buried in January, in the middle of a cold, Russian, winter, which precluded there being ANY water in the grave. (the Tsar's Diary says 'Minus 12'.) See more »

Another sensationalist movie about Rasputin.
4 July 2007 | by See all my reviews

What an awful movie. Rasputin is portrayed as a completely insane person. We get no insight at all into his personality. This is just another movie in a row of sensationalist movies about Rasputin. The only movie who takes Rasputin seriously is "Rasputin" made in 1996 starring Alan Rickman, Ian McKellen, David Warner and others. It's so tiring to watch yet another Rasputin movie about a crazy evil monster creating havoc. Always we get "The mad monk" angle. Rasputin was never a member of any monk order and therefore never defrocked, but who cares about details like that. There was a real religious side to Rasputin and there was a darker side, but the books and movies only focus on the latter because that's where there's money to be made. I wonder when we're going to see a historically accurate movie about Rasputin. Perhaps never, I fear...
