Storyline

Jack Holborn is 13-year-old orphan in the 1800's that wants to get a job on a sailship to avoid foster homes. He is hired by Captain Sharingham, and they set sail. Jack was found on the steps of the Holborn catholic church in London, when he was a baby. He was wearing a leather arm band with the name "Jack" on it. The nuns therefore called him Jack Holborn. At the sight of Jack's arm band, the captain reveals that the band looks familiar, but he won't tell Jack what he knows. The captain is now reluctant to keep him. Jack is desperately seeking answers, and is not about to let the Captain off the hook. The Captain also has a twin brother who works as a judge. The two brothers hate each other, mostly because of the captain's piracy side business. Jack sneaks onboard the Captain's ship "Charming Molly", and the journey begins. A journey that consists of piracy, traveling through swamps, and slavery in Bombay. Jack will find his answers, but the road there is long. Written by Annie Gravdal

Jack Holborn in German!
21 December 2006 | by santamaria_josephSee all my reviews

I still do not know of anyone personally who remembers this brilliant series except me. It is a classic swashbuckling affair set (mostly) on a pirate ship, the central character being a young stow-away called Jack Holborn.

I have long wished to track down a copy of the series and have finally been successful in finding it for sale on DVD from Amazon Germany and Amazon France! The only problem is that there is no English Soundtrack and I don't speak German or French! However, it was amazing to see it again as what had mostly stuck in my mind was the imagery and scenery and the music. Watching it was like going back in time to the days of childhood TV on days off school with not much to do. I have also purchased the original book on which the series is based, by Leon Garfield.

Reading the book shall hopefully fill in all the gaps in my memory and also serve as a means of translation for me and all those who speak not in the Germanic or Franco tongues.
