Times Square in New York will be closed to the public Thursday night for New Year’s Eve celebrations, the first time there won’t be a crowd at the iconic locale on December 31 since the first ball drop in 1907 (the first celebration at One Times Square in Manhattan was in 1904). But in a year in which the entertainment industry has had to adjust to a virtual stage, the show will go on and the ball will still drop at midnight.
Official Times Square New Year’s Eve co-organizers Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment will present a six-hour commercial-free webcast (closed to the public and following New York state health protocols), with Jonathan Bennett returning as host. It will include performances from Andra Day, Gloria Gaynor, the Uso Show Troupe and The Waffle Crew. Designer Jeremy Scott is now a puppet master.
Instead of a live fashion show for his Moschino spring/summer 2021 collection, Scott teamed up with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop for a film showcasing 40 new looks using 30-inch marionettes.
Produced by Alex Winter, the seven-minute short, “No Strings Attached,” features a full runway show that even includes a front row of marionettes of the fashion journalism elite, including Anna Wintour (Vogue), Nina Garcia (Elle), Edward Enninful (British Vogue), Angelica Cheung (Vogue China) and Vanessa Friedman (The New York Times).
“I tried to look at all of this as opportunities, not obstacles,” Scott told Variety ahead of the film’s Times Square premiere on Saturday morning. “My mantra has been from the very beginning, ‘My body may be in quarantine, but my mind isn’t.’ I’m a creative person who is extremely used to lots of people, travel, all these different...

Adapted from Steve Erickson’s brilliant and hypnotic 2007 novel of the same name, this is a story about someone who thinks that movies are the most precious things in the universe; someone who believes that cinema reveals the work of God, and that celluloid hides the secrets of all creation in the space between sprocket holes. Franco, on the other hand, has always maintained a somewhat messier “throw shit at the wall and see what sticks” approach to artistic creation. Prolific to the point of self-parody before reports of sexually exploitative behavior slowed him down, he’s been emboldened by a digital culture that rewards volume and encourages disposability.
That isn’t meant to be a criticism so much as a statement of fact. Franco is a creature of the 21st century, far better equipped to pay homage to “The Room” than to solve the hidden mysteries of George Stevens’ “A Place in the Sun.

The fight to save “The Oa” intensified this week after a digital billboard went live in New York City’s Times Square urging Netflix to renew the science-fiction drama series for a Season 3. The show, created by indie favorites Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, was canceled by Netflix on August 5 after two ambitious seasons that divided critics but earned a passionate cult following. Since the axe dropped on the show, diehard “Oa” fans have rallied together to save the series and convince Netflix to reconsider a third season. “The Oa” Season 2 ended on a meta cliffhanger that promised a bonkers Season 3, which is only adding to fan demand for more episodes.
As reported by the Los Angeles Times, “Oa” superfan organizer Ryan Lulofs launched a GoFundMe campaign on August 11 to raise money for a Times Square billboard that would campaign to save the series. The campaign started with a goal...

An anti-corporate fable produced by a massive conglomerate that’s monopolizing the film industry while pawning chintzy reproductions of the precious jewels from its own vault, “Dumbo” isn’t exactly Disney’s finest hour. And yet, it’s almost certain to be the most creatively inspired of the “live-action remakes” the studio is releasing this year. For one thing, Ehren Kruger’s otherwise unremarkable script begins where the 1941 original ends, and dares — in its own tepid way — to add a human element to a story that never really had one. For another, you can only go so wrong with a cast that includes Danny DeVito as a two-bit P.T. Barnum, and a larger than life Michael Keaton as the best villain that a “Bioshock” game never had (brace yourselves for a “Batman Returns” rematch 27 years in the making).
But to the limited extent that “Dumbo” works, it ultimately does...

Bradley Cooper may not have picked up a Best Director nomination at the Oscars this year, but one organization certainly thinks he deserves to be recognized.
PETA awarded Cooper the “Oscat” on Tuesday “for his enlightened decision to cast his own canine companion in A Star Is Born rather than using one supplied by a notorious animal exhibitor.”
Cooper cast Charlie as his dog in the self-directed musical drama also starring Lady Gaga because they already had the bond he wanted portrayed on the big screen.

With just 16 days left in 2018, many filmgoers might think they’ve seen the last of the Marvel movie heroes for this year, especially since Warner Brothers and the “Distinguished Competition” are clearing the multiplex waters for Aquaman. Mind you, this has been a stellar year for Marvel Studios which had three films in the box office top ten, with Black Panther and the latest Avengers at the top two spots, but now it looks that there’ll be one more hit by the drop of the Times Square glitter-ball. But technically it’s not from that studio. Sony has had a lock on the Marvel mascot, Spider-Man, for all of the new century, but after the disastrous reboot flicks in 2012 and 2014, they wisely joined forces with Marvel Studios for last year’s smash Spider-man: Homecoming. Now Sony said they’d continue making their own spin-offs with secondary characters and villains.

(Goldman with James Caan on the set of "A Bridge Too Far"- 1976)
By Lee Pfeiffer
There's an old joke among writers about the naive young starlet who thought she could make it in Hollywood by sleeping with screenwriters. Indeed, the people who made it possible for hit films to exist by writing the scenarios the actors carried out on screen were often regarded as being very low on the industry totem pole- and relatively low-paid as well. Not so with novelist and screenwriter William Goldman, who elevated regard for screenwriters while demanding- and receiving- the kind of breakthrough salaries that revolutionized the film industry's respect for writers. Goldman has died from cancer in Manhattan at age 87. He was known to be opinionated, abrasive and demanding, but no one questioned his talents. He won Oscars for "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and "All the President's Men". Among his other...

Some historical moments date much faster than others, and that can be deeply amusing if you lived through them. Y2K is the great recent example: it was a huge deal before it happened, and was forgotten and ignored almost immediately afterward when the popularized apocalypse failed to actually happen.
Kyle Baker’s graphic novel I Die at Midnight is one of the small breed of Millennial Thrillers, set on New Year’s Eve of 1999. Amusingly, it was even published in a Y2K style, with a big “V2K Vertigo” imprint at the top left that everyone has since forgotten that DC’s Vertigo ever used at all. Interestingly, it has a copyright date of 2000, which makes it a late entry in this derby: most of your Millennial Thrillers came out in 1997-1999 to capitalize on the hype beforehand and promise horrible world-ending terrors on that fateful night.

Season two of HBO's The Deuce has arrived, and you may have noticed a slight change in the hairstyles, the fashions, and the look of Times Square this time around. That's because show creators David Simon and George Pelecanos made the decision to jump the series forward in time five years to focus on a "new era" in the New York porn industry.
The last episode of season one wraps up nicely, with the premiere of the 1972 porn classic Deep Throat, and talk about how the Stonewall Riots of a few years earlier have started to change things for the Lgbtq+ community.
Season two takes place in 1977 - and for good reason. According to the show's official synopsis, the year is "the apex of the Golden Age of Porn, when the dream of a mainstream X-rated film business is suddenly a credible reality, and the culture of pornography and...
