Because Danny Lloyd was so young, and since it was his first acting job, Stanley Kubrick was highly protective of the child. During the shooting of the movie, Lloyd was under the impression that the film he was making was a drama, not a horror movie. In fact, when Wendy carries Danny away while shouting at Jack in the Colorado Lounge, she is actually carrying a life-size dummy, so Lloyd would not have to be in the scene. He only realized the truth several years later, when he was shown a heavily edited version of the film. He did not see the uncut version of the film until he was seventeen, eleven years after he had made it.

King, suffering from a hangover, shaving, and at first thinking one of his kids was injured, was shocked when his wife told him Kubrick was really on the phone. Danny Torrance's imaginary friend, Tony, isn't given much of an explanation in the 1980 film, however, in the book, Tony is actually Danny's adult self speaking to him from the future (in the book, Danny's middle name is Anthony, or "Tony" for short). One of the shots in the part where Jack is bouncing a ball against a wall took several days to film. This was because the shot entailed the ball bouncing from the wall onto the camera lens as it filmed. As Stanley Kubrick was so determined to get this precise shot, the camera kept rolling while the ball was continually hit against the wall in the hope of it bouncing back and hitting the lens. It took everyone on the entire unit having a go at it in between other shots before the shot was finally achieved after several days.

This film was shot in the same film studio that was used for Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980). In fact, much of the same fake snow used for this film was used for the Hoth scenes. Stephen King visited the set of both films, and met director Irvin Kershner. This later became the basis for part of his book "It". Kershner had been nicknamed "Kersh", and was directing the first Star Wars film to feature Yoda. In the Stephen King book "It", there is a character named Mrs. Kersh, who is said to sound like Yoda when she talks. As well as countless other mentions of Star Wars in various King books.

The famous opening scene was shot in Glacier National Park in Montana just north of St. Mary's Lake. The road seen in the scene, Going-to-the-Sun Road, does actually close down during winter and is only negotiable by snowcat. Kubrick initially sent a second unit to the Rockies in Colorado, but they reported back that the area wasn't very interesting. When Stanley Kubrick saw the footage they had shot, he was furious, and fired the entire unit. He then sent Greg MacGillivray, a noted helicopter cameraman, to Montana and it was McGillivray who shot the scene.

Filmmakers tend to strictly follow what is known as the 180-Degree Rule when filming two characters in a scene. The first shot of a scene typically establishes each character as being on either the left or right hand side of the screen. Although the camera may change angles many times over the course of a scene, it never moves more than 180 degrees from its original position. Keeping it less than that keeps the characters on their established sides of the screen, while going over (referred to in film-making jargon as "crossing the line") causes the characters to reverse position, disorienting the viewer. Kubrick breaks this rule during Jack's meeting with Grady in the men's room, visually hinting to the viewer that Jack is becoming more like Grady.

Approximately 4,000 people auditioned for the role of Danny Torrance over a six-month period. The interviews were carried out in Chicago, Denver, and Cincinnati by Stanley Kubrick's assistant Leon Vitali, and his wife, Kersti Vitali. Aspiring actors were asked to send in photographs of themselves, and from the photographs, a list was made of the boys who looked right, who were then called in to interview. Stephen King was highly critical of Shelley Duvall's portrayal of Wendy, and for Stanley Kubrick's conceptualization and direction of her. He said Kubrick's Wendy was one of the most misogynistic characters ever put to film; and he insisted that is not how he wrote the character. Duvall struck back, saying "The Shining was a success. Stanley Kubrick took a 2nd rate novel and made a first rate movie. It was a success.". The paintings of topless African American women with huge afros on the walls of Hallorann's bedroom in Florida are of a style that were very popular in the late sixties and seventies. The fact that he had them in his bedroom make a point of the notion that his "shining" is not because he is a holy man of some sort, but just an everyday guy. It might also be noted that the ochre-brown walls are reminiscent of the Overlook Hotel, which could be a way of inferring that the fellow is never completely free of the place.

Lia Beldam, who plays the nude young woman in the bathtub, said in a 2018 interview that she was working as a photographic model in London and her agent was approached by Hawks Films to supply girls for the ballroom scene, so she was sent along. She brought her modeling portfolio and when the director and producers saw the several nude photos she posed for, they changed their minds and offered her the part of the woman in the bath instead. She said she enjoyed working with Stanley Kubrick who was a true gentleman on set. The original theatrical aspect ratio for this movie is 1.85:1, however the film was shot using the entire film frame (1.37:1 or 4x3 as is known in current technical set-ups). The film has been known to be shown full screen on VHS, LaserDisc, television, and more in the 1.37:1 or 4x3 aspect ratio, revealing more picture information on the top and bottom of the screen. For many years with 4x3 televisions, Kubrick much preferred the movie be shown this way, to avoid any cropping at the sides of the image, and as most of his photography was centered and vertical, it also added to the effect on smaller television screens. However, this movie has always been intended as a 1.85:1 presentation, despite many conflicting opinions and viewpoints to the contrary. Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket (1987) was also shot this way, and while Eyes Wide Shut (1999) was believed to have been shot in 1.37:1, this was proven incorrect by examining the 35mm prints of the film, where hard mattes and camera equipment were present outside the 1.85:1 safe zone. Monday, September 29th, 1980 was the night of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962)'s annual anniversary show, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson: 18th Anniversary Show (1980). It was ten weeks after the release of this movie, but most Americans had not yet seen it and were not aware of any details, beyond it being some sort of horror film starring Jack Nicholson. That evening, when people tuned in for the show, it did not start off with the normal theme song and visuals, but for no apparent reason there was an immediate cut from the normal "coming up next" bumper to a film sequence. There was Nicholson running with an ax, Shelley Duvall screaming, the ax going through the door, then Nicholson saying the now famous "here's Johnny" line, at which time the Tonight Show theme played and the show started. It was one of the funniest moments in the history of television. It also drove another couple of million people to see the movie, giving it an unexpected extended run.

Shelley Duvall suffered from several anxiety attacks and near mental collapse during the 56 weeks of filming. In a 2016 interview on Dr. Phil (2002), she revealed that Stanley Kubrick, known for pushing his actors to their breaking point, had bullied her throughout the production and treated her more severely than any other cast member, a point Jack Nicholson affirmed. Duvall pointed out that her character was in a near constant state of panic, anxiety and fear; given the punishing shoot schedule (six days a week averaging sixteen hours per day) she had no relief, telling Dr. Phil, aka Phil McGraw, she believed the film caused her permanent psychological damage.

Various critics have pointed out how this might be a coming of age story for the characters; particularly Jack and Danny. In the scene where Wendy discovers the pages and pages of gibberish; "All work and no play..."; etc; if you look closely on the pages Jack has types; many of the sentences say the following "All work and no play make Jack Adult boy." Adult as opposed to "a dull"; this is an obvious commentary on Jack's maturity issues and his unwillingness to embrace adulthood full on; and how this (along with everything else; the cabin fever, the alcholohism; the presence of supernatural in the house); might be generating the crisis.

James Brolin and Harrison Ford were considered for the role of Jack Torrance. Ford was probably not the right type as his closest Shining-type role would ultimately be 1986's The Mosquito Coast (1986), also about an obsessed man terrorizing his family, it a movie that was not very well received. Brolin on the other hand might have been too on the nose, having just completed The Amityville Horror (1979) a year earlier which had almost exactly the same plot: a man, George Lutz, is disturbed by ghosts in his house of another man who killed his family, and is almost moved to do the same. Brolin was definitely scary enough, and could have probably done a more convincing arc from normal guy to psycho than Jack Nicholson did, and probably would have pleased some skeptics of the film like Stephen King. But if Brolin was cast, all people would see is the plot similarities between the two stories, and would have dismissed this movie as a ripoff, losing the striking originality of this subsequent movie. The casting of Nicholson takes typecasting and turns it on it's head. In One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), Nicholson played Randall McMurphy, a lovable, heroic psycho who is terrorized by a female villainous woman, Nurse Ratched. In this movie, he's still a psycho, but instead of being lovable and heroic, he is evil, a symbol of mankind's never-ending depravity itself. Instead of being terrorized by a woman like he is in Cuckoo's Nest, he is instead terrorizing his wife. And unlike in Cuckoo's Nest, where he is trying to escape his home - a mental institution - he loves his home, the Overlook Hotel, and desperately wants to stay there, even after Wendy desperately asks him to leave.

Lloyd the bartender shares an old adage with Jack, "Women - you can't live with them; you can't live without them." It is a very hackneyed and overused statement. A few years before this film a comedian said the same line but with a twist: "Women - you can't live with 'em; you can't kill 'em." For those who were familiar with the second version, when Lloyd said this they immediately thought about the latter. This was very clever on the part of Stanley Kubrick. Since those days, the "can't kill 'em" version has been as overused as the original, popping up in a number of a number of movies over the years.

The film that Danny and Wendy are watching on television on a quiet afternoon at the snowbound hotel is Summer of '42 (1971).
In the German-language version instead of "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy," Kubrick used "Never put off til tomorrow what may be done today."
While script changes during a film production aren't uncommon, Kubrick (who co-wrote the screenplay) was introducing scene changes almost daily and after his actors had already learned their lines. Jack Nicholson said of the changes that eventually, when presented with with a revised scene he would throw it in the trash, knowing another was coming anyway.
Stanley Kubrick was involved in the casting of the German dubbing of the movie. He chose Jörg Pleva as Jack Torrance. Kubrick previously gave Pleva the lead German dubbing roles for the characters of Redmond Barry in Barry Lyndon (1975) and Alexander DeLarge in A Clockwork Orange (1971). This movie was Pleva's last dubbing work in a movie. Ironically, Joachim Kerzel, who later became Jack Nicholson's standard German dubbing voice actor, did the voice of the character Stuart Ullman in this movie. It is also notable that the line, "Here's Johnny," was altered in the German version to "Hier ist Jackie!" - "Here's Jackie!" - referencing the character's name of Jack Torrance. This was done because Germans at that time weren't familiar with The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962).

There are a lot of comparisons between this movie and Session 9 (2001), but blink and you'll miss it identical small giveaway and parallel: when Jack Torrance is locked in the kitchen closet, he wakes up next to open Oreos and peanut butter. When first released, the film had an alternate ending. After the shot of Jack's body, the film dissolves to a scene of policemen outside the hotel. It then cuts to a scene in a hospital, where Wendy is resting in a bed, and Danny is playing in a waiting room. Steven Spielberg praised the scene in which Wendy finds Jack's "novel" and is confronted by him, as a great example of counterintuitive direction by Stanley Kubrick. Spielberg noted that the obvious way of playing the scene would be to have Jack suddenly appear over Wendy's shoulder while she and the audience is preoccupied with the manuscript. Instead, Kubrick abruptly cuts away from Wendy to a shot from behind the pillar that tracks over to a distant view of Wendy from behind, thus preparing the audience for Jack's entrance into the frame and eliminating any shock of his appearance. Spielberg noted that Kubrick's unusual way of filming and editing the scene had two benefits: 1. In Stanley Kubrick's original treatment, the resolution was completely different. Originally, instead of being confronted in her room by an axe wielding Jack after he is freed from the storage room by Grady, Wendy goes outside her room to see if Jack has indeed made his escape. He then jumps out and surprises her, chokes her, and smashes her head into the wall. Wendy then takes her knife and stabs him in the stomach, fatally wounding him. As she attempts to crawl away, however, Jack remains alive, crawling in pursuit, in an ensuing struggle, she finally manages to kill him, only to hear the sound of a SnowCat arrive outside. She then attempts to locate Danny, only to find he is not where she left him. Dick Hallorann then arrives at the door, only to encounter Grady. They have a brief conversation about "some business" Hallorann has to finish, to which he then gets hold of an ax, and then manically pursues Danny, much like Jack does in the final film. However, with the knowledge that they both share the same telepathic gift, Danny uses this to his advantage, throwing Hallorann into confusion. Then, just as it seems Hallorann is about to murder the child, Wendy locates both of them, and goes berserk, violently stabbing Hallorann to death. She then retrieves Danny, the two of them then bolt outside into the SnowCat and drive off. The camera would then focus on a scrapbook of the Hotel's history that Jack looked at early in the film, a mysterious hand comes in from off-screen and takes it, followed the sound of receding footsteps. The film would then end.

Alcohol consumption was a federal crime between 1919 and 1933. The year Jack appears to have photographed for the last scene (1921), and the year President Warren G. Harding (in the book) ordered a case of Coors Beer from the bar (1922) would have occurred during Prohibition. Alcohol consumption was never a federal crime in the U.S. The Volstead Act prohibited "the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors". Consumption was never a crime, only a myth. Also, in the photograph, not one person is holding a drink. Indeed, one may even assume that liquors were never purchased at the Overlook during these years, but may have been included as a sort of part of membership, a type of end-around used even today in dry counties. After all, Lloyd clearly informs Jack that his "money is no good here."

This is the first film of Stanley Kubrick's to include the use of a Steadicam. He found the current cameras on-set to be almost obsolete for the type of shots he wanted to achieve during filming. He wanted a free and full range of view, but wanted the shots to be smooth and precise. When a colleague suggested that he use a newly developed piece of technology, Kubrick was hesitant. Kubrick shot with a Steadicam for many days before eventually allowing its usage in the film. Its usage can been seen in the film during such scenes as when the camera is following Danny on his tricycle through the halls of the Overlook Hotel and when he and Jack are running through the Hedge maze near the end of the film. This movie was also one of the first dozen films to use a Steadicam.

As Jack's sinking into the alternate world increases, his financial situation appears to change. When he is first with Lloyd the bartender, with the two alone in an empty ballroom, he says he has "two twenties and two tens", then finds his wallet empty. Lloyd tells him his credit is good. By the time Jack enters the filled ballroom, his wallet is no longer empty as he takes money out of the wallet in an attempt to pay for his drink. The only other currency mentioned is that of his soul, which upon first sitting down at the bar, he swears he would sell for a drink. During the Closing Day segment of the movie, Dick Hallorann talks to Danny and Wendy extensively about the Kitchen and calls Danny by his nickname 'Doc' without having have heard him use the term first, indicating that he has the Shine like Danny. He quickly covers up his admission by that saying that Danny looks like a 'Doc'. While this is implied at the time as a term of endearment, it is also a foreshadowing for the sequel novel and Doctor Sleep (2019), when adult Danny Torrance uses his Shining power to ease dying people's pain at the hospice he works at he is nicknamed 'Doctor Sleep.'

The two daughters of Delbert Grady (the caretaker from 1970) speak in British accents, as does the waiter, who turns out to be the same person. As Jack and Grady leave the enticing and pleasant 1920s atmosphere of the ballroom, they step into a severe-looking modern restroom with bright red surfaces. As Ullman had told Jack that the entire wing had been entirely renovated, the restrooms should have been done in the same style as the rest of the wing. The fact that the restroom is starkly different and that this is the place where the reality of the fantasy world is made clear, this indicates that the issue is that of Jack's soul and not of the elaborate fantasy of the ballroom and the rest of the hotel.

Wendy sees the bruises on Danny's neck and thinks that Jack did this. Later, when Danny tells her it was done by the woman in room 237, this provides Jack with an out. Rather than making a case that the woman must have left, Jack acts like it was Danny's delusion, which would place the suspicion back on Jack. This lack of clarity on Jack's part is a manifestation of his unbalanced mental state.

The iconic scene where Jack Torrance goes into Room 237 and finds a naked and attractive woman only for her to morph into a hideous hag covered in blemishes and rot is oddly similar to a scene from Robert Eggers' directorial debut known as The Witch: A New England Folktale. There are relatively few murders onscreen in the Shining; just one, Hallorann; and two if you count Jack freezing to death at the ending. They do have multiple flashbacks to the Grady girls getting murdered; and huge pools of blood spilling out of the elevator; but these are just dreams. It's ironic that there's only one death in the scariest movie of all time! The Exorcist; which is the other scariest movie of all time; also only has two deaths.

As Jack creeps towards Wendy in the baseball bat scene, he is traveling in a counter-clockwise circuit, which is the direction Danny traveled in on his tricycle. Danny's counter-clockwise circuits take place before he ascends to the haunted second floor, which is the direction that Wendy moves when she backs up the stairs. She doesn't strike him until she is actually on the second floor.

Stanley Kubrick was very unimpressed with Stephen King's writing right after he saw Carrie (1976) and he described King as a man that he thought thinks too little with his writing ideas. King had also later said that he thought that Kubrick was a film director that thought way too much with his film ideas. King had also thought that this movie was very "cold" and veered away from the novel's ending. King said, "In my novel at the end the hotel burns down and in Kubrick's film at the end the hotel freezes that's the difference between warmth and cold and I'm not a cold guy."
Stanley Kubrick's is the only one adaptation of a Stephen King novel that King always remembered hating for years and years and he still doesn't like, but King did say that after he had saw Mike Flanagan's Doctor Sleep (2019) - an adaptation of King's 2013 novel of the same name and a sequel to his 1977 novel "The Shining" - that he now really appreciates Kubrick's film a lot more, the 2019 movie a direct sequel to the 1980 film. King had also said in the past that he really didn't care or pay much attention to the film adaptations of his novels.

As Wendy and Danny find their way around the maze, Jack is seen looking at a scale model of it inside the hotel. At the end of the film, he chases Danny into the maze and gets lost in it, freezing to death, while Danny is able to escape.
