Sex & Nudity

  • In one scene you can see two pictures on two walls depicting nude women. Bare breasts can be seen for a few seconds.
  • A fully nude woman walks out of a bathtub and makes out with Jack. She displays full frontal nudity (her bare breasts, buttocks, and pubic region are shown.) She then turns into a naked old woman and starts trying to strangle Jack. Because her body is now severely decomposed the scene is no longer erotic.
  • In a bizarre series of shots, a man in a bear costume is shown kneeling before another man in a conspicuous manner (implying oral sex.)

Violence & Gore

  • A man is killed with an axe blow to the chest (bloody but not excessively so).
  • Violent acts are discussed, plotted, and threatened.
  • A elevator lets out a river of blood. This image is shown several times during the course of the movie.
  • The bloody murdered bodies of two children are briefly shown.
  • One frozen corpse.
  • The movie is more surreal and disturbing than outright violent, but there are some brief violent parts. Very little blood is shown throughout the 144 minute running time.
  • There is a scene where you see two mangled dead bodies of girls in a corridor surrounded by pools of blood, as well as an axe.
  • Jack Torrance smashes down doors with an axe while a woman hides ready to defend herself with a knife. She slices his hand with a knife, blood briefly visible.

  • 12 uses of the word Fuck
  • Some uses of the n-word.
  • Several uses of the phrase 'son of a bitch' and other milder profanities.
  • Some minor religious profanity.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A man smokes and drinks.
  • A woman smokes cigarettes.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A bizarre scene shows a man in a bear costume kneeling before an older man. Implies oral sex. The way the scene plays out is quite unsettling for some. Not scary, just random and disturbing.
  • Suggested MPAA: R for disturbing violent content and images, terror, some graphic nudity and language.
  • The Shining is often considered one of the most terrifying films ever made. It exchanges cheap jump scares and instead contains much surrealist and bizarre imagery, as well as a very strong sense of dread and suspense and psychological terror. However, there is probably about one full minute total of onscreen blood throughout the 142-minute duration of the film.
  • In one scene, a small child is riding down the hall on a toy tricycle and sees two girls' ghosts (and then flashbacks of their bloody hacked up corpses).
  • A naked woman is shown in a bathtub. She then turns into an old, decaying nude corpse. She then creepily laughs, as she tries to catch Jack.
