Future director, then head of publicity and marketing, Jim Wynorski, is the one who came up with the title change and tagline, and did additional filming, in order for this to be known as "Screamers" in the United States.
For the American version B-movie producer Roger Corman had additional footage shot for the opening which runs for around just under twelve minutes with the total amount used for the New World Pictures US version totaling to around fifteen minutes.
The movie has had numerous titles for its English language releases which include "Screamers", "The Fish Men", "Island of Mutations", "Island of the Fishmen", "Something Waits in the Dark", and "The Island of the Fishmen".
Barbara Bach was first top-billed in the lead female role in this movie which features the mythological underwater city of "Atlantis". Bach had recently appeared in the James Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) which featured a villain's underwater lair also called "Atlantis". Even her character names were similar, Amasova in the Bond film, and Amanda in this movie.
